So i came in to some money and im really stuck between a ptr-91 gi and an arsenal sgl-31. I like the cheap mags for the ptr but i hear it kicks like a mule. The ak has expensive mags but the ammo is cheaper. Im looking for mainly a plinker but also a good shtf gun. Thank you all for your time

PTR doesn't kick like a mule... it kicks like a giant nail gun. Ka-CHUNK. From what i gather, that's what everyone's always complaining about. It doesn't kick any harder than any other .308, but many find the 2-stage recoil impulse uncomfortable.

Mine has a PSG1 buffer. FEELS softer than my SKS now.

If you plan to shoot milsurp in a PTR, avoid AW serial numbers, at least under #8000, from what i hear. Or get a GI model.

Of course, the GI doesn't have the bull barrel. Mine prints nice, tight groups, hot or cold. PTR91F, AW serial.

Even the picky ones eat steel cased ammo with no problems. And they don't care about getting dirty. Just tar-sealed ammo.

Alternately, I hear the Arsenal, inc. guns are also top notch.

7.62x39 is cheaper to shoot. 7.62x51 is more accurate and powerful.

Sorry if i haven't really helped with your dilemma.

ETA: Just noticed the little "gi" in your post. No ammo pickyness with them, just get a heavy recoil buffer (2-stage or PSG1) and you'd be gtg.

I'd get the PTR. Biggest reason is everybody and their mother's-in-law poodle has an AK and AKs drool and 91s rule!

I like my PTR-91

One more thing and I'll shut up...

PTR's aren't terribly common. I often roll up at a range where other people are shooting. The loud, brass-chucking PTR never fails to get attention. It doesn't seem that loud from behind it, but if you're cross range you can really feel the report. A friend of mine mounted a camera to the winshield of my car while we were using the hood as a rest once. His AK was impressive enough, but when i started shooting, you coul see the camera shake with each shot as the shockwaves hit the glass it was mounted on. Lol.
