But was it really an Airsoft?

...I instinctively lean forward and reach back to unholster my weapon and by that time she's slammed on the breaks are we're about even with the bed of the truck and I notice the orange ring around the end of the barrel (it's an airsoft gun). I breathed a massive sigh of realief...

One candidate for a Darwin Award painted the tip of his AK-47 pistol orange and openly carried it in a park..

From "Findings of Fact" on page two.
"Plaintiff's weapon had an orange colored barrel tip that Plaintiff painted onto the barrel..."

To the OP, are you sure that the AR-15 like object you saw was in fact an Airsoft? Would you bet your life on it?

Another concern that came up after the passing of the law requiring the orange markings was that thugs might try to buy some hesitation from cops by marking real guns as such. To date, however, I've not heard of that being an issue.

I do remember that idiot aswell, he talked about it like he was being unfairly treated and such when he deserved it. He posted a picture of it but covered the muzzle as I recall. I don't even understand why he did it in the first place but then again, stupid is as stupid does.

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 years old I got in trouble for pointing my red ryder at cars driving by my house. Our neighbor at the time stopped and told my parents what I was doing. I remember him telling my parents that his kids would never do that. My parent took my gun away and gave me a good talkin to (with a belt). BTW, the guy that stopped has been my father-in-law for the last 8 years. I guess I showed him. Ha ha.

Hah!! Well, I guess you'd best be taking right good care of the wifey then... unless you want another good whoppin'!!;)

So just because it had an orange tip it must have been a toy/air soft? Im not saying anything the OP did was wrong, but you can't automatically assume, no harm no foul. There are plenty of bad guys running around with real guns that look like toys.

I understand you can't just dismiss it as a toy because you see the orange tip, but I was roughly a few feet away at the whole area was brightly lit, lots of street lights, and bright lights from a near by business, also I'm very familiar with both real AR style guns as well as airsoft and paintball guns, I've just recently exited my teenage years :p
At the point where I discounted the threat as non-real I was positive beyond a doubt that it was an airsoft rifle. Also the kid was leaning pretty far out the window so I could see 90% of the weapon, and it wasnt one of those perfectly accurate $300 replica arisoft ones, it was the type you get at walmart for $39.99

Had the area been dimly lit, had I not know there were such things as toys made to look so closely like real weapons, or had I in any other way been not completely positive it was not a real AR-15 then there is a very real possibility I would have fired

Yeah, I thought about that, I could've not realized it was a toy and shot them, but I would have possible taken a KID's life for being stupid, I just couldn't live with that. I would however press charges if I hear back from the police, I plan to stop by tomorrow morning and see if anything ever came of it.

Sonic,

Here's a lesson: never bring a handgun to a rifle fight. If this kid had been carrying and AR-15 and really wanted to do you harm on a random whim, then there was nothing you could really do about it.

Also...why would anyone want to shoot you with an AR-15 in the street? Why would they do it from a truck - in front of God and everybody and at random!?

Seriously, even the most insane criminal "wildmen" always have an excuse = a series of events that lead to their destructive BS: and this works from the VA Tech shooter all the ways to that maniac who was blasting kids out of the University of Texas Watch Tower.

I think we panic about too much.

I guess if someone starts shooting at me with a rifle, I should just assume the fetal position and wait for him to come to me? No, I would draw and fight till either he is stopped or I'm dead.

Good luck!

Better yet, instead of considering drawing your pistol and fighting as the answer when you are "Ambushed", why don't you consider running for cover, assessing the situation - and then fighting your way out if need be?

I mean, if someone "Ambushes" you, then don't they hope that you will try to hold the ground on which they have chosen the time, place and method of attack? How can this be of advantage to you?

And if you retreat, then how can this be bad for you other than a sense of "Pride" which compared to a sense of "Life" seems awful small.

It's kind of hard to find cover and reassess the situation when you're strapped into a vehicle under someone else's control though

Not all times you can safely retreat, even so, someone having a rifle does not mean that he would automatically win a gun fight, especially at close range. There was one case of a mass shooter with a MAK 90 that was almost stopped by a citizen with a 1911 if it wasn't for him wearing body armor. He was shot 4 times center of mass and fell to the ground only to pop up again and come around his vehicle and shot the guy that tried to stop him. Also drawing and firing can provide covering fire to allow you to safely retreat.

If they ambush me with a rifle then they are probably shooting and I would probably be killed before I can even think about drawing. Plus why would they expect me to return fire? Criminals attack people that appear unarmed. It appears as though you have less of a sense of life than me.

This isn't about pride, its about staying alive. Are you thinking about someone shooting from a roof top at me? This isn't Afganistan.

So those of us who aren't carrying a rifle everywhere we go are doing it wrong? Considering the majority of people find the act of conceal carrying a rifle completely impractical and may not have the choice to use one when engaged by a rifle-armed assailant your "lesson" is pretty worthless. Doubly so when viewed in the context of the OP, in which he was a passenger in what I assume is his friend's car. Having body armor is also better than not having it, but that doesn't mean telling people to wear it all the time is good (or even applicable) advice.

Aside from shooting back and stopping the threat yes, he would have been at the absolute mercy of the man with the rifle. Starting the fight at a disadvantage doesn't mean you have absolutely no chance of surviving or winning, and if you think it does than you're going into it with the wrong mindset and may very well lose regardless of how the odds are stacked.

Does it matter? Is the reason why a person is interested in visiting harm upon me even remotely important during the actual assault (or at any other time for matter)? The moment a person points a gun at me I doubt that my assailant's motivation will influence my decision to shoot him or not.

You know there was a recent case where two gunmen started firing at a bus in the middle of the day over the threat of calling child services, one guy had a AK of some type that was either an underfolder or a pistol. It happens. If I was expecting a fire fight I would, 1 not got there, or 2, bring my shotgun.
