sorry, i really hate to flood the place with questions like this but i gotta ask it.

i want to scope my ar-15, but, on account of my dad not trusting his own or my hands; i cant remove the gas block/ front sight. so, how high will i need to mount the scope for it to work with the sight post there. do i only need the center of the "bore" of the scope to clear it? or do i need the whole thing to?

these are the things i was looking at.

thanksalot and sorry again for the noobish question.

With most scopes on higher power setting won't even show the front sight. Lower magnification ones will show a small shadow.

But if you remove the gas block/front sight block your going to have a straight pull bolt action rifle. You can get gas blocks without the front sight, or even a gas block with a picatinny rail so you can put a flip up one on it if you decide to take the scope off.

Yep, like TDH said, you won't know it's there especially with a big objective scope.

I have a 4-16x40mm objective scope Mounted on mine, and it is mounted directly to the upper receiver without high rings and I don't have any problems at all... You shouldn't even worry about it unless you plan on using a scope with a lower than 4x objective. I have the same scope and set up on my FAL and it works just fine... Mount it low and enjoy:D!!

Still 2 Many Choices!?

I had a Swift 6-18x44 mounted on my Colt National Match. I used Badger medium rings and the front sight had zero effect on my view whatsoever. Leave your front post alone - you can add a Troy rear BUIS for just in case...

Something else you might want to consider is some sort of high comb cheekpiece for the stock. With the scope being mounted on the carrying handle, it is, for me at least, well above where I can get a halfway decent (and comfortable), position on the stock; and still maintain a decent sight picture. I've seen several different styles out there; the one I got is made from an elastic material and has a number a shims of varying thickness, which you can slip under the sleeve till you find the heighth that is right for you.

I think he's mounting it on the deck and not on the carry handle, but you're right - cheek weld with a large optic up there can be difficult for some....
