Im looking at getting a 9mm pistol. (To go with my 45) Im wondering, What do you guys suggest? I want to keep it under 500 bucks. I was looking at the Makarov, but thats 9x18, and was wondering if there were any 9x19's for under 500 that i should look at. Perferably a fullsize, type firearm. I saw CDNN has walther P38 P1's for pretty cheap. But i know nothing about them. The berreta's they have are nice too, is the 96 the same as the m9 our troops carry, Whats the difference if its not.

Many might disagree Jim but - if a DA/SA was acceptable then a P95 could serve you well. Fugly, for sure. Robust? yep ... and reliable? .. that too. At perhaps $325 to $350 sorta tag ... not bad value. Less for a pre-owned.

Some other options could well go over that budget but again .. if looking around at pre-owned ... maybe your choice would extend quite a bit. Some might say to think CZ ... others, find a good used SIG. Some might even mention (wait for it) ... Glock!!

Quite a few options ... and we'll see what other folks come up with.

Lets see.
CZ75B I got mine about 6 months ago for $360 + tax and background check.
Steyr M-9. CDNN has these CHEAP right now.
Various S&W autoloaders in 9mm are fairly cheap right now, especially the DAO police turn-ins.
CDNN is also selling Sig turn-ins for around $380.

Shoot a few and see what you like.

CZ-75
Sometimes a Browning HP can be found for $500 or less.

The difference between a Beretta M9 and the 92 FS - at this point it is the sights. The M9 has a beefed up slide compared to the 92, but I think that has been changed in new 92 models.

I bought the CZ75 when in your situation. Fire a bunch and see what you like they are all different. The "fullsize" Kahrs are around 500 as well.

I believe Beretta 96 is .40 S&W, the 92 is 9mm. Not really into Berettas, personally, so I may be wrong. A new 92F will prolly cost just over $500.

I'd take a serious look at the CZ lineup first, however. Check here: www.cz-usa.com and www.czforum.com. Mine are superbly accurate, rugged, and reliable. Ergonomics are fantastic for my hand, and it points well also.

If you want something in polymer, check out Springfield XD-9 and the Glock 17. Many members here have positive experiences with both, just do a search.

Just out of curiosity, what .45 do you have, and what do you like about it? Do you want the 9mm to be similar to your .45? What will the 9mm pistol mainly be for (general use, range use, home defense, duty weapon, etc.)? A little more info will help others give you better recommendations.

Good luck.

Hi,

For CCW, S&W 908 is a very good value. I have an earlier 3913 that is very similar. Slim, compact, very reliable, and below $500.

Yup. CZ and Rugers.

I liked my P95 so much that I bought a P97 (.45) to go with it.

I've shot Chaim's CZ75 and loved it. I have a CZ40 that's pretty awesome.

Can't go wrong with either, but check to see if you can get a new CZ in Maryland; not sure if they play the ballistic fingerprinting game or not. I KNOW Ruger does.

CZ all the way. MD? You may have to look - I don't think CZ is playing the MD game right now.....See if EAA is importing the Witness line - CZ clones with good reps, usually pretty inexpensive.

If you look hard you may find a used Glock (17, 19, 26 or 34) for under 500.00 Sigs (225, 226, 228 and 229) are a little more expensive, but you may luck out.

Hey Slimjim,

I realize in your post you stated you wanted to keep it around $500. If your .45 is a 1911, take a quick look at an STI Trojan in 9mm. I was in the same spot you are in and was looking for a 9 to complement my .45. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted a pistol that I did not have to learn a new manual of arms for. All my current carry equipment (leather) will fit this gun.
Of course, whatever your current pistol is, if the manufacturer makes the same style in 9mm, get that model. That way you are not trying to learn something new, (unless that is your goal).
Anyhow, I hope this makes sense, and if your .45 is a 1911, look at STI for a little brother. I have been extremely happy with mine and glad I spent the extra $$$.

BHP, lightly used, is #1 recommendation.

I recently checked with CDNN and they're not shipping to MD, so that leaves them out as a reasonable cost source, UNFORTUNATELY. It's a combination of the ballistic fingerprint and the chamber or magazine lock requirements that is the culprit here.

Just about any of the other choices mentioned - S.A. XD9, the Sigs, Glocks, and Beretta 92 - won't disappoint. I have and have shot at least one of each, and they're all better than I am. None is hard to clean and they're all reliable pistols, IMO. As always, let hand fit and feel be one of your guiding factors.

Merry Christmas, and happy shopping!

Steyr M9 or CZ-75B

Smaller hands go with the Steyr, average to large hands go with the CZ. Either way you can't go wrong. Merry Christmas.

We can get CZ's in MD, they do shell case some of their guns and the Omega Lock makes them MD compliant.

If you are looking for a good 9mm under $500 here in MD you'll most likely end up looking at used guns. Other then CZ's and Rugers most semi auto's are over $500 (the XD's are just barely ove that at $515 including Omega Locks)

Look HERE for some prices and pics of guns we have 4 sale. I'm still working on getting more pics up. All the prices include the Omega lock

For all wonder. The .45 is a 1911. Its a Springfield ww2 milspec with a few..tweaks. :D

One thing, I dont like glocks, besides the fact they dont feel right to me, they are too blocky. (Sorry glock owners, if it works for you, thats great, it doesnt for me)

Im going to be looking in local gun stores and in PA gun stores also. Id really like to find a beretta in my price range. And its probly what i will try to go with. Although The XD's, well. ill have to check one out.

Jeepdriver: Whats the price on that Inox?

I rented a Glock 19 over the summer to see how well the shot. Well, it was accurate, reliable, and FUN. The only problem was that it didnt feel right in my hands. Then, after holding a personally owned G19 with Hogue grips, it felt like a glove.

I bought one that had already come with Hogue grips, and I dont think I will ever get rid of it.

I would at least try holding one with a Hogue or some other grip. They feel completely different than the stock grips.

CZ75B if you want an all steel pistol. It's a good size, nice trigger, and virtually no muzzle flip.

Springfield XD9 if you want a plastic pistol.

I just picked up a Hi-Power for under $500. in very nice condition.

I prefer it much more than my CZ 75.

I have played with the Springfield XD and it really pains me to say this, but...I really liked it.

I have a springfield XD-9 that I really like, I also think the EAA witness and the cz-75 are fine 9mm for the money and have owned both.

My Ruger P89TH set me back all of $340. It came with Hogue grips and that made a big difference in feel and comfort in my hand. The Springer XD would be an excellent choice for a polymer pistol and they come in 3, 4 and 5 inch versions if you should think about a compact version.

[flame suit on]Taurus has improved their quality control a bunch over the last couple of years and they have some reasonably-priced models. Look at the 24/7 and the PT911 in 9mm. And all Tauri (??) pistols now have large capacity mags. [/flame suit off :D ]

I would definately suggest Ruger, either the p95, or the p89/85... i have an 89, and it is a great shooting and functioning pistol. 1000 rounds through it with not a single problem. I've also shot several berrettas, both in 9x19 and .40, they are great guns too, and definately a piece of cake to clean (not that rugers are hard to clean) but they are a little more pricey than Rugers i think.
I've also heard great things about CZ75s, i hope to be getting one soon. I've shot numerous glocks as well, and they work great, but just arent as comfortable or fun to shoot as others in my oppinion. I would say steyr is worth a look too.
