You can't go wrong with a Colt or Springfield Armory 1911

"Between the Springfield Loaded and the Kimber Custom II, which would be the better pick?"

The Springfield, very few reliability issues compared to the Kimber.
+1. I had a Kimber TLE II 1911 and traded it off for a Springfield Armory loaded "Champion" in stainless.

Springfield makes some great 1911s for under $1000. As far as Kimbers, I just don't trust the Schwarz safety they use in them, no matter how many billion Kimbers are out there. Colt ditched the Schwarz safety back in the 1930s for a reason...

I don't care for the external extractor that Kimber uses, either.:barf: Colt and Springfield use internal extractors, as the 1911 was originally designed with an internal extractor.

Colt is making some really great 1911s these days, too. I recently read an article in which one of the 1911 gurus said the Colt XSE series 1911s are the best 1911s Colt has put out in 25 years. A friend of mine has a stainless Combat Commander XSE and loves it. My shopping list for 2006 includes a blue steel XSE, either Government or Commander size.

Since you said you only want it for punching holes in paper, what kind of distances are you looking to punch paper at??

Do you want to compete with it or strictly for "fun at the range" hole punching??

If strictly for "fun" I'd say for $999.99 get an RIA and LOTS of ammo!
(and if you want to add certin features, a RIA, the features and a little less ammo!) :p

Springfield Loadeds sell for around 650...that leaves lots for extra mags, a trigger job and practice ammo.

S&W's 1911s are really nice, too.

Kimbers seem nice, but I have heard lots of reliability issues with the external extractor models. I have heard of no reliability issues with Springfields and they have a lifetime warranty and great customer service - thats worth something.

There were alot of grumblings about Sig's 1911s when they came out. Yes, I was surprised, too...because my Sig 220 is flawless, but their 1911s had reliability problems.

I, too are looking at a sub-1000 dollar 1911 to upgrade my SA GI 1911 (which has been a decent piece, BTW) and the Springfield Loaded model in black stinaless (very pretty...have you see one?) and the S&W 1911 are leading the pack. I am leaning Springfield, only due to my great experiences with their guns.

For accuracy my Kimber Gold match will drive nails, and the trigger is sweet also. My SA loaded is a nice piece and very reliable but for target shooting the Kimbers is my baby. I wouldn't worry too much about the firing pin safety. Most manufacturers have them. As for carrying locked and cocked, tucked inside your wasteband, pointed at your genitals, I like a firing pin safety. I live in Michigan, it has been a shall issue state for almost 5 years now. To date no-one has fired his concealed weapon. The biggest danger your likely to encounter is blowing your b---s off.
