I'm hooked on the idea of a short, handy bolt rifle chambered for a low-recoiling cartridge -something like the .243 or 7mm-08. Suggestions? Other caliber ideas? Thanks.

I bought a Remington 700 SPS Youth in .243 today. It fits me well and my daughter will be able to shoot it also. This will most likely become my deer rifle this year.

This one has the new trigger, but best I can tell it is pretty good with the factory setting. Remington is selling them in left hand also.

I can add a first hand reccomendation for the Remington model 7. My .260 has been 100% reliable, groups 1 1/2 inch, and is very handy.

the best 4 are all remmy, 7 , mohawk 600, 660, and the 788. the last 3 would have to be used. A ruger scout type looks good, but expensive.
I just saw at a gunshow today a little piece of fabulous; It was a Mossberg ATR, "black..." something or other. Short, with a scope and bipod allready on it, with a 4-12 x 50 scope on it, for under 500 bucks!!!! This one was in 308, if they have this in 243, that would be awesome.

Remington Model 7 all the way. A little bit pricey but solid and dependable. Fits everything you are looking for. Though I do have to admit that a detachable magazine would be cool. Not really needed but nice.

I considered getting one of these, but I got the M77VT instead, as I plan on using it more for varmint shooting. If I was looking for a short, light .243 for deer hunting, I'd reconsider -

Ruger Compact

This little beast weighs 6 lbs (plus scope) and has a 16 inch barrel. (!)

Yes, there's a velocity loss associated with the reduction in barrel length, but the typical "mission" for a short rifle isn't 400 yd shots across a canyon. It's still hunting, brush, etc. Deer or hogs.

Edit: It also has a 12-1/2" length of pull, though grip/trigger guard dimensions are unchanged. Some don't find this objectionable, and others wonder what happened to the rest of the stock. Good for smaller individuals, of course, as the stock comes "pre-cutdown"

The Remington catalog lists the Model 7 CDL, some camo models, and a youth model. I'm suprised I can't get a basic black one.

My choices would be:

  1. CZ 527 Carbine
  2. Savage's Classic or the Weather Warrior

The CZ is prettier than the Savage, but the Savage is an excellant value.

The cz carbine is as sweet as they come if .223 or x39 are ok. I'm hoping they will soon chamber it in 6.8 spc. A lightweight rifle in .243 will not be that low in recoil, and certainly 7mm-08 will not. Up to you to define low recoil though.

Remington model 7 stainless is hard to beat in .243 with a good scope (Zeiss Conquest Leupold VX-III or Nikon monarch or buckmasters in decending order in 2-7x32 prefferably but 3-9x40 would be good to if a little big on it IMHO)

My bud has this very setup (I nearly bought it then he bought it for his son) shoots walmart 100gr remington express ammo into a jagged hole at 75 yards and one hole at 25 and 50....100 yard groups ar a very tight cloverleaf. Nice light handy rifle...this one is just awsome.

Ruger make a nice lightweight handy carbine as well in several flavors from scout rifle (frontier I think?) and standard config. We have an old Rem 700 bdl with a leapould on it that's my buds daughters rifle....we loan it to many wives and GF's at the hunting club and it has never failed to drop anything yet when the shooter did their part

If you are trying to combine light weight rifle and low recoil I would stick with a .243 or .223. Shooting .308 out of a light weight rifle like the Remington 7 will have a lot of recoil.
