The idea of a scout rifle continues to intrigue me and seems to have plenty of support in the rifle community. I am primarily a pistol shooter and with the exception of the AR15 platform, have very little long-gun experience. I'm hoping the forum can help with some ideas and info.

Unfortunately, none of the major manufacturers (Remington, Winchester, Sako, Weatherby, Savage, ect...) offer a rifle slotted to accept stripper clips.

I'd like to have a handy little scout-type rifle for general purpose. I'm not really looking for an Enfield or Nagant, rather I'd prefer a newer manufacturer like the ones listed above. The caliber would be 7mm-08, or .308. The optic would be a scout-type, and likely the Leupold version.

I've read that Brockman does this modification and at $105, it seems very reasonable. Has anyone had this done and what are your impressions? Whay type of clip is used? Are they readily available? I thought the 7mm-08 had the same cartridge dimensions (at the base) as the .308. If that's the case, is there any reason why stripper clips wouldn't work of the 7mm-08?

What are some other options (other than a military rifle)?

Thanks

DIY Scout Gun

Dude,

I just went to Brockman's sight and the price is, to say the least, outrageous for my taste.

Savage makes a scout rifle in .308 that has an excellent reputation and runs around $350.00-$400.00 on the used market. They are hard to find, but are not rare, so just post a WTB.

For my money, I am building a DIY scout on a mauser action. So far I have about $300.00 in the whole rig, including two different scopes(a red dot and a 2-7). I purposely built the rifle being "budget minded" to prove it could be done.

pics are here:

Since those pics the rig has been refinished in DuraCoat three color grey "Urban Camo". I'll post more pics when I can.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have, if you'd like to DIY

I have seen clip slot blocks that screw onto a Winchester or Remmington action using the rear scope mounting holes. Highpower shooters use these in the rapid fire stages with their match rifles. The ones I have seen use regular USGI M14 clips which will hold .30-06, .308 or 7-08, among others. I don't know where to get the blocks but some of the target shooting supply places probably have them. Milled in clip slots, ala Brockman, would be cleaner but a lot more expensive.

Sinclair lists it on their site.

You don't want a Nagant, but want something that's a .308, with a modern bolt design? Look up a Samco .308 Spanish Guardia Mauser. There was a thread a little while ago from someone who made one of those a scout gun, said it worked well. I have one, and it works well, but I am already considering the "scout gun" option (w/o "sporterizing" the thing!!!). Also, they're relatively cheap, but good luck with the whole .308 stripper clip thing. Just my .02 :)
