Moderators. This seemed the best place for this question but move it if you think otherwise.

I have a chevy silverado ext cab. The rear seat is a full sized bench seat that has the back bolted to the back wall. The actual seat flips up. I intend to carry a long arm in the cab with me and am wondering about the best way to secure it. Most likely a lever gun of 18-20" in size.

I'm considering mounting some type of scabard to the bottom of the seat so that it's out of sight when you look into the truck. I also wondered about mounting a box to the floor under the seat towards the back but I'm afraid it would take too much room. I keep tool bags and such under the seat right now to keep them out of the way.

I prefer to keep it out of sight so no back window racks or over the head consol carriers.

Thoughts on this approach? Suggestions?

Two schools of thought - put the best you can get in your truckvault, and then you will have it available all the time, so drop a DSA FAL with 10 magazines, ready to use.
The other is the one I subscribe to - my vehicle may be a screaming pile of (censored), but it is still subject to being stolen, f for nothing more than the gas! So, I do not want my highly expensive rifle finding it's way into the black market, and I am not out $1,500 very hard earned bucks, etc. So, if you have to have a long gun in the truck, get an inexpensive and durable one that doesn't have the same street appeal, like a Yugo SKS with stock everything, and 100 rounds in pouched stripper clips, or a Mosin Nagant M44 carbine and two battle pouches with 60 rounds of pint sized howitzer ammo. Then if your street artillery get's swiped, you're not out a fortune, especially with the $70 Mosin....

I have a friend who carries a Win. trapper in his PU whenever he's out and about (it doesn't stay in the truck when not in use). He uses a rack similar to one used in law enforcement for a shotgun. The trapper is short enough that the barrel barely sticks up above the dash board and he covers it with a jacket, so it's not visible. He can lock it in place when he's out of the vehicle.

GM sells a lockable storage box that bolts to the floor using existing hardware & fits under the rear seat on the 1999 & newer Chevy & GMC fullsize trucks. It looks similar to the one in Preachermans link & sells for,IIRC,around $315ish.

Available from any GM dealer nationwide & comes w/a 12 month warranty.

The price in the link is probably suggested list.

When I had my full size Bronco, I had my Mosin Nagant M44 secured under the back seat by two hooks. The hooks were the rubber coated type and screwed through the floor and were secured with nuts. It never went anywhere and was still easily accesible and easily removed.

I since discovered it was easier just to keep a handgun on me, so the Nagant now sleeps indoors. I could reach the rifle from the drivers seat, but it was a stretch. You probably have an easier reach to the back seat in your truck.

You could cut down on the length of the weapon even further by using a shotgun with pistol grip and folding stock. Regardless of weapon choice, I think your idea of a scabbard is good. The only thing you're gonna have to be careful of is which way it gets mounted. You're gonna want to be able to draw it from the drivers seat and if its pointed at the back of a seat, you aren't gonna be able to get it out.

Unfortunately I can't reach the back seat from the drivers seat. I have an extended cab truck with a "pilots chair" for the drivers seat, not a bench seat. There is a console between the two front seats also. So for me to get anything from under the rear seat I'd have to climb out of the drivers seat, over the console, and into the back seat. I also have the half sized doors with rear mounted hinges for access to the back seat and they can't be opened until you open the front door.

So I'm assuming that to access a rifle I'll have to exit the cab, open the rear door, and retrieve the rifle. I'm also assuming that I won't want to access the rifle from inside the cab except under the most dire circumstances. If something bad is happening outside I should just pop it into 4WD and floor it, if that's at all possible. If someone or something is so close I don't have time for that then I should be able to use the .40 handgun I have within easy reach instead.

I had been carrying my 9mm ugly gun behind the seat of my Ford Ranger. But switching to my SKS makes sense. Can't get 7.62 x 39 at Wal-Mart in case it gets stolen.
