I'm looking for suggestions for a conceal piece for my wife. The requirements are:
  1. Left Handed
  2. Small Frame
  3. 9mm or .380 auto
  4. Under $500

It seems like a lot of the guns that we have tried are just too big for her hand. We've looked at 1911 Compacts, Bersa Thunder, Springfield XD, S&W MP-40, <gasp> S&W Sigma series 40, CZ-75. She's tried my PA-63, but the grips I have are right handed and that thing kills the webbing of your hand, unless you shoot with a glove. not to mention the safety is on the wrong side for a conceal piece for her.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Left handed really limits you. How about a Kahr P9? No saftey to have to deal with but the mag release is on the left.

You might consider a S&W SW-99 in 9mm. My wife carries one, and loves it. It's DA/SA and the mag release is in the bottom of the trigger guard, and can be operated with either index finger very easily. You can buy 'em new around $400.

Thanks guys, I'll check into those. Another one that was suggested is a Beretta PX4 Storm Compact, so we'll have to check that out also.

I LOVE my Sig P232. fanastic gun. and very sleek and sexy, so wimminfolk usually love it.

The PX4 Compact won't be released for another couple of months (at least).

My wife is 5'2" and she shoots my full-size PX4 with no problem with the small backstrap installed.

BamBam,
She is not a fan of wheel guns.

Navy87Guy,
Maybe it was the full size then. We'll look into it.

I would suggest the kahr p or cw series , and possibly one of the police trade in hk p7s that are real affordable now if she likes it since it is totally hand neutral . ( the squeeze cocker is both the safety and the slide release . )

We ended up going with a Beretta 84 FS Cheetah. The grip is a bit wider than a single stack piece, but it's a nice gun and a good fit for her hand. It's a 380 Auto and has an ambi decocking safety with a switchable mag release.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

One ambi gun that is a small caliber but a nice shooter is the Sphinx AT-380. Hard to find in the USA. Good, solid Swiss gun with a little bit of heft...not too much...to tame the recoil.

I also agree with the above poster that the S&W/Walther P99 seems like a great gun for lefties. There is a review of the compact version in a recent Guns & Ammo. I would think that with all the interchangable backstraps, one would work for her.

Ladysmith 3913 in 9mm which your dealer will probably have to order...but fine little weapon...also like the Beretta Cheetah 380...both fine weapons...

Edit: Oops .. I missed your Beretta find.

Free plug for FN:

FN FNP pistols seem nice and shoot well .. so I've recently experienced.

Ambidextrous controls, Impact guns prices it under 5 bills .. not sure if the compact 9M is available, though.

The FNP (not M) is just a tiny bit larger in grip length than the Glock 19, but sure felt alot better to me. Notably in SA mode.

M&P9C meets your criteria. You can reverse the controls and change the backstraps. Make sure she tries all three sizes before she writes it off.

My wife uses a Kahr K9. She is not a lefty, but I am, and I PREFER a "right-handed" mag release, the button on the left side of the frame, where the left index finger can reach it. It is a tremendous advantage, IMHO, which most lefties seem to fail to understand.

Under $500, how about the Kahr CW9? The mag release can be operated by the trigger or middle finger, and the slide stop need not be hand operated at all unless locking the slide open for showing clear or whatever. The S&W M&P has been mentioned already.

Over $500, the S&W 3913. The "standard" one has an ambidextrous safety. The LadySmith version has a single-sided, but I see no reason why the lever on the other side could not be retrofitted.

I took my wife looking for a concealed carry pistol this weekend. We went to a large local gun shop and then to Bass Pro. She did find something she liked at the local gun shop. We still need to visit a few more. I won't tell you what to do, but I went with my wife & told her to pick what SHE wanted. I only mentioned to her that she should consider how she would carry it & that smaller lighter guns tend to kick harder than larger heavier guns. So I left it that she could get whatever she wanted and that we would rent one for her to try before we buy it. She had already determined that she wanted 9mm.

Check out this website, it might help you out.
