Am in the market for a small 9mm for carry. I have a s&w 6906 which I love but its a little heavy and uncomfortable in hot weather. I need something in the under $500 range. New or used doesn't matter. Been looking at the springfield xd. But am open to any suggestions. Help me choose.

Several great suggestions thus far. I'll add the Kel-Tec P-11, and CZ 2075 Rami P (polymer frame).

I will point out that the SIG 226 and 229 are both going to be bigger and heavier than what you want - since you want something smaller & lighter than your 6906. The HKs are also very nice, but even used may push the $500 budget. If you like the HKs though shop around and find that good deal on a used one. In a SIG the P239 is a nice single stack, which you may be able to find used in your budget. The SIG 228 is the 9mm only predecessor to the 229; it's lighter & better balanced. Used a 228 should fit into your budget.

Another vote for the Kahr CW9. I've got one I carry almost daily. It's small and light, a great carry gun.

The Kahr PM9 is the easiest to carry in sumer weather, but is a tad over your price range. They now have a P9 sized model the CW9 that omits the dovetail front sight and has a few other cost saving changes to the slide that is under $400.

Because of our climate and the way I dress, I usually end up carrying the PM40.

I'm also in the market for a small 9mm and have been doing alot of searching for what I like best. Still haven't made a choice yet but trying to narrow it down. I like the CZ P01 alot, I also liked the 2075 RAMI but the grip was just too small for me. Wasn't much to hold on to, but it might work for you.

I also looked at the XD 9sc and the S&W M&P compact 9mm. I think both are great choices, I like the feel/grip of the M&P more than the XD but you can't go wrong either way.

Other than that I'd definitely consider the Taurus Millennium Pro 9mm (PT111) for the price. If you want something really tiny the Kahr P9 or other 9mm might work well for you. Or probably on the more expensive side the HK P2000 series is very nice.

Glock 26.
Same size and weight loaded as a loaded steel J frame Smith and twice as many rounds.
In a pinch it will accept any Glock 9mm magazine up to the 33 round G-18 model.

The Sig 239 is very hard to beat. It may not be the smallest but it certainly is one of the more accurate and reliable sub compacts.

Although my dealer had to call several distributors, I really like my PT111 Mil pro.

$319.99

So far has eaten everthing I have fed it:

Honady XTP
Blazer Brass FMJ
Brown Bear FMJ
PMC HP

Very accurate shooter also.

Khar PM9 is over your price range but IS sub-compact. This can not be said for a lot of the other suggestions (P2000, M&Pc, USPc, G26,etc). I have a PM9 and it is MUCH smaller than my USPc (and well smaller that many "compact" pistols).

The cost issue reminds me of discussions that took place when I got my national competition drivers licence:

:uhoh: Why would you use a cheap helmet to protect a pricless head?

Save up a bit more and make a better choice. ;)

The Kahr PM9 and MK9 both fit the bill as subcompact 9mm pistols. However, with a good holster, the Glock 26 is definitely easily concealable. The Sig P239 is another high quality firearm.

From someone who now sells handguns for a living, and sees what gets returned, I'd advise you stay away from poly frame Taurus pistols.

If you are planning to tuck it with an IWB holster, i'd really look at the Kahr CW9. You can get the P9 which has a little more done to the slide aesthetically speaking, but functionally the CW9 is basically the same gun. It's cheaper too so you can save some money and put it towards another gun for range duty. Some people have had bad luck w/ Kahr, including me, but I'm going to give them another chance because their guns are so darn perfect for carry purposes. You won't find another gun that has the same near-perfect carrying qualities that the Kahr polymer guns do. It's like you don't even know you have it on you...but the CW9 gives you 7+1 9mm with a FULL grip and a 3.5" barrel w/ overall dimensions smaller and lighter than any G26, XD9sc, P2000sk, etc etc.

I was messing around at a GS today and was able to pick up a CZ "Rami" and really liked it. I can't wait to see if the range has one so I can shoot it to see what it's like. I prefer my HKs but that little gun felt good and seemed to be well designed. It comes in polymer/steel or all steel.
