Anyone here have suggestions on outdoor (weather-proof) security camera manufacturers / models? Also, is there any down side to using wireless cameras? If you have outdoor cameras, did you self-install or have them professionally installed?

I've found a lot of info on the net, but I don't know enough about these careras to figure out what info was useful and what info was not. Any suggested sources where I could do some reading would be great. If possible, I would like to do this without having it professionally installed, for a couple of reasons. First hand info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I haven't yet made use of any form of cameras, since every place I'm concerned about is fenced, open to observation, and subject to free range by large and very territorial dogs. I've often looked at the systems available from places like Costco and Sam's Club, but have never made use of any of them, or done any serious research on them.

I hope someone else who can offer more information will weigh in...

Mtncreek, check out supercircuits.com. They have something for every budget. Cameras is like scopes. You get what you pay for. Wireless cameras still require power. You can do it yourself. If you need assistance PM me and I'll give you my phone number and will be happy to talk you through it if you do have problems.

Also IR cameras have different ratings for distance seen in complete darkness. Anywhere from 30ft to 1000 ft. You can talk to someone at the place I listed and tell them exactly your layout and what you expect to see and your budget and they will make recommendations to you.

Thanks for the info. I may take you up on your offer.

Right now, I'm leaning toward a PC based system. I like the flexibility that could offer if my needs expanded (more like my budget allowed..) and initial investment would be substantially less than a purpose built NVR or DVR. I don't have a good grasp on digital security. Whether a dedicated unit or a NVR equipped PC, I want files stored on site And backed up off site. I also have one or two proposed camera locations where wireless would make installation much easier. That raises some concerns for me: Cameras/NVR will be wired to an internet line and one or two cameras communicating via wireless. Obviously, I don't want someone other than me to have access to the images and in the case of wireless, I also wonder if someone could interrupt the signal.

Despite the reading I've been doing over the last month, I still don't know enough about how all this works to make an educated decision. I'll probably sit down w/ legal pad in hand and put plan to paper, that should at least raise enough ?-marks where I'll at least know what questions to ask.

Thanks!

Hey just thought I'd ad that this place....

http://www.securitycamera2000.com/

is a good company to deal with. I use them for all my FPV stuff. I have had an issue with a camera and they were quick to send out a new one.

If you look on good luck buy they have video transmitters and receivers for reasonable prices. like this one here.

RX/TX units are available in 900Mhz / 1.2~1.3GHz and 2.4GHz in the states. It's up to you to decide which frequency. It depends on location.....
