Something I've never really understood about the AR platform is the height of the iron sights from the bore-axis. Maybe I just don't know how to shoot an AR; but I felt much more comfortable when I detached the carry handle and changed the front sight for a DPMS railed gas block and mounted a scope with Burris medium rings.

Roughly measured, the carry handle rear sight is about 1 1/2 inches from the top of the rail, where I am more comfortable with a scope setup that put the crosshairs about 1 1/8 inches from the top of the rail.

My question is: are there any BUIS / detachable sights that are lower than standard? I've looked at some setups like the MBUS, which I initially liked but when I saw pictures of them mounted they looked as high as regular sights, which feel too high for me.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Bump?

Any suggestions at all? Somebody out there must have something, I've seen plenty of pictures on here of people with red dots and BUIS setups and all sorts of AR gizmos.

Troy makes some of the Best on the Market. Magpul makes the best for the money.
KAC also makes a nice one although I personally don't like it.

Anything designed for "HK-416" height will be shorter than standard AR sights. These are useful for several guns out there that have top rails that are higher over the bore than the standard AR top rails.

The two that I'm aware of are the HK drum set designed for the 416, and Troy now makes a "stubby" set of their folding BUIS that is shorter than standard. There are not a ton of these out there yet and last I checked they were not on the website, but they are trickling out. As near as I can tell they may have been originally designed in collaboration with Titan for the latter's HK416 clone.

Both are on the pricey end for BUIS, but a good cheek weld is a nice thing to have. Whether shorter sights will lead to range of adjustment problems on a regular AR, I don't know.

From the Troy booth at SHOT: Troy stubbies on an evil XCR. XCR is one of the rifles that greatly benefits from the stubbies:

Lucky you.. TROY did just lower their prices, and you can get the pair for 200$

Sweet; people were paying about $260 when they first made an appearance last month I believe. I still need to order a set.

Thanks much for the replies. Those Troy sights do look to be just about what I'm looking for. $200 though, hmm.. don't think I can do that just yet. I liked the relatively low-expense of the Magpul MBUS.

My plan was/is to perhaps sell the scope I have mounted and go back to iron sights, preferably lower, more comfortable (for me) iron sights. I also don't want to have to swap out the gas block again and all that entails. Plus, I figure if I can get a decent price for the scope I could get a BUIS setup and still be up some cash, but the Troy set there would maybe let me break even.

At least I know what's out there now and have some options to consider.

Something else I just noticed: Troy only sells the Micros as a set, but since my gas block rail is below the level of the upper receiver rail, it would probably be better to get a "stubby" rear and a regular front or I'm guessing I'll need a riser block for the front. Looks like more and more rifle designs are coming out with a continuous top rail, but that makes it tough to get exactly what I'm looking for.

Not to hijack, but do the troy stubbies co-witness an Eotech? I'm a AR newb and trying to find a set that will co-witness with an xr308 Eotech.

No, really they don't

Sure they do. Okay, maybe the word 'nice' was a stretch, but they do make a low-profile folding sight. :D The way ARMS has conducted their business would lead me to believe that my worst enemies are buying ARMS products.
