I plan to load some rounds for my neighbor for deer hunting but, due to the shortages of all firearm related items, all he could find was 165 grain bullets. Any suggestions on what might be usable powders for this caliber/weight bullets? Thanks!
The 165 bullets your friend found might be the bullets to reload for the newish 350 Legend by Winchester. The problem with the 350 Legend is the bullet diameter used is .355" bullets, not .358" that is needed for the 35 Whelen.
I checked on Midway USA and there are a whole bunch of proper .358" Rifle bullets available. Check your powder on hand and the compatibility of bullets weights available there and order some proper bullets.
You should look at current 35 Whelen reloading data that works with what powders you have on hand and will work with an available bullet. I Can't imagine that 35 cal. rifle bullets are going to be scarce.
I reload for a 358 Winchester. I use the same bullets that your friend's Rifle shoots. For Deer I use the 200 grain bullets. They work fine.
Oh boy, the bullets he bought are the Hornady FTX 35 cal. that say .355" did he waste his money? The dies are RCBS 2 set for 35 whelen and, we have some 30-06 once fired casings to resize for the Whelen. Thanks!
Yes, he wasted his money. I also reload for the 338/06. I do use once fired 30/06 cases and neck them up to .338" using a tapered expander I also take once fired 308 Win. cases and neck them up to 35 cal. using a tapered expander for the 358 Win..
I would suggest you contact RCBS and get a 30-35 cal. tapered expander, if your Whelen expander in the die set is a standard 35 cal. button. Makes it so much easier to go from 30-35 cal. Don't forget to lube inside the case necks.
