sunglasses as eye protection

All well and fine, but the Oakleys offer thermonuclear protection

Anyone know the difference between Plutonite and polycarbonate? I'm thinking ad agency, but what do I know?

Good coverage, solid frame and polycarbonate define shooting glasses for me. Do become aware of what they can and cannot do, however. Considering how important our eyes are, I have never found adequate eye protection. It's all a compromise, so ANSI Z87.1-2003 is a beginning. Put them on, check for peripheral coverage, and push back against your face to see if they are well supported or what would happen if a shock wave hit.

Use them in conjunction with a cap brim, and you will have done what you can for damage control. I like polarized for sunny conditions, clear or amber for overcast or twilight. Randolph, Zeiss and Decot may not win any fashion awards but they amortize out over years of shooting.

they are your eyes, if you feel comfortable shooting with them, they that is what matters. i have been shooting on and off for over 45 years. for the vast majority of them, i had no eye protection at all. partly, because i did not know better (in my younger years) and partly because i did not think i needed anything. probably 25 years ago, i had an incident, that changed my veiw on that point. i had a firearm (22lr semi-auto) that double fed. when the bolt slammed home, the second cartridge went off (which was pointed sideways, bullet end out the side) and i was sprayed with hot burning powder all over my face. luckily, i was shooting by myself, so no one really got hurt aside from some nasty residue in my eyes. but the next day, i went to the gun store and bought a set of shooting glasses! that pair has been gone for a while now, but i own several newer pair now. i either shoot with them, or a pair of tinted snap-on safety glasses. exception, i do not use eye protection when i am hunting. although, with my eyes, ( i am going to need glasses soon) that may soon be changing.
