I'm reading the novel "Pale Horse Coming", and I was curious about some uber-fast revolver shooters. I imagine that the character "Ed McGriffin", who could shoot a revolver 6 times in 4/5ths of a second and get all six shots in a group small enough to be covered by a single hand. I wouldn't be surprised if this is exaggerated. Does anyone know of some super fast revolver shooters? Like world-record holders and such?

Ed McGivern -- 1-23-34
5rds -- 2/5th of a second -- all on a playing card--

Yup,
McGivern's book"Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting" has been reprinted a few times, well worth looking for and reading. I remember reading that the characters were based on real people, BTW. Haven't read the book:D . Probably will.

The amazing things about Ed McGivren are that he had short fat fingers, not at all what you would think of a fast gun handler, and the revolvers that he used were stock, out of the box S&Ws. Quantrill

I saw Jerry Miculek (the best revolver shooter in the known universe) shoot at the old Second Chance Bowling Pin Shoot. I usually wished for a video cam so I could play the tape back and actually see what he was doing.

Jerry is supposed to have broken some of Ed McGivern's old records several years ago. After Team Smith & Wesson was broken up by the company he switched to the autopistol for a year. On the line at Second Chance he jammed the gun by shooting it faster than it could cycle the slide. The next year he was back to shooting his old Smith revolver a long-barreled M27.

In case you didn't gather it from the preceeding posts, "McGriffen" is "McGivern". ;)

yeah but in that book all the charcters are loosely based on real old time gunfighters / writers and the names are subtley changed

I believe Miculek can empty a six shot DA revolver, reload it and empty it again in 2 seconds. All shots hitting the target.

IIRC, he can also empty an eight shot DA revolver in a second or less with all shots hitting the target.

Jerry Miculek's records are 8 shots in 1.00 second (PC 8-shot 627 revolver) on a single target, 8 shots on 4 targets (double taps) in about the same time and 12 shots with reload (625 with moon clips) in 2.99 seconds. S&W used to have an article detailing this on their web site, but I guess it's now old news and has been removed.

Jerry's not quite as fast as McGivern, but a lot faster than I'll ever be able to do.

Both Jerry and Bob Mundun are unbelievably fast to see. It's like a fully automatic revolver and with Bob it's usually a single action.

Both are incredible.

I would like to see what some of the greats could do that I have never seen.

What is amazing is when you watch them shoot in slow motion and still have a hard time seeing everything.:what:

Speed Shooting

Bill Jordan, U. S. Border Patrol, was no slouch when it came to fast and accurate shooting.

In addition, he was a real gentleman,

John

I saw the video of Jerry Miculek with the 8 shot in 1.00sec and the 12 shot w/ reload in 2.99sec.. This was me --> :what:

It was the 12 shot with reload that REALLY floored me.. VERY impressive..

Munden also one he!! of a shot!!

Saw the same clip as Robear. Stumbled into it while flipping channels.

When I saw that :what: I thought to myself...."he didn't just reload that, did he?!"

Then there was a slow-mo replay. You had to look close - but sure 'nuff....he reloaded that silly thing. And the revolver wouldn't even "rat-tat-tat" like a machine gun. It hummed like a sewing machine!

I have shot at Jerry Miculek's school Bang Inc. Jerry is a great guy, and a great instructor.

In my first class with him my shoot improved greatly.

The classes are a lot of fun, watching Jerry shoot is great. I highly recomend the classes.

If you're in the Morro Bay, CA area next weekend drop by the San Luis Obispo Sportsman's Association range on Hwy 1 just north of San Louis Obispo to see Jerry Miculek and other top notch revolver competitors in action. Almost invariably the local media will interview Jerry during the match and ask for a demonstration.

Bob Munden does some really strange things with an SA. He is able to point shoot way better than I can aim.

One of my favorites is his draw and fire three shots from the SA in less time than I can blink. hitting three separate targets. He uses two fingers and thumb in rapid succession to fan the hammer. Incredible.

The date on that International Revolver Championship is June 20-22.

Revolver competitors are very approachable and helpful. Jerry is a real gentleman as are the others. I am destined to help fill out the bottom end of the roster, but like to participate just to help me remember that the world really is okay afterall and there are some decent people out there.

By the way, McGivern is the one that Jerry Miculek looks up to. He had apparently been denied use of McGivern's revolvers, etc. for a direct attempt on the record. Jerry recognized that technology on timing equipment and firearms have changed so decided to create new records rather than comparing apples to oranges.

The only times I've seen Jerry shoot for speed he was always using a two handed hold. The pictures and old movies always show McGivern blasting away using one hand. Is that true for all the records?

Elliot

I don't know which grip Ed McGivern used to set his records as I've only seen the exhibition clips. Jerry Miculek uses two hand grip in all records.

I concur that Jerry Miculek is the fastest I have seen and that was on television.
I know that a person on this forum, Mr. Smith, is no slouch with a revolver.
