Super Redhawk grips - Hogue Monogrip VS Tamer

I just aquired a Ruger Super Redhawk in 480 Ruger.
I also own a GP-100 and put some Hogue rubber monogrips on it.
The monogrips work pretty well, but I would prefer a wider grip. I also think that the palm swell in the monogrip is too pronounced which leads to a sore spot on my palm after a lot of shooting.

My question is:
Are the newer Hogue Tamer grips wider than the regular Hogue Monogrips and is the palm swell the same on the two grips?
I'm interested in getting the Tamers for my 480, but it's difficult to tell if they're skinny like the Monogrips.

just put 120 rounds of 500 grain through the .500 mag...the monogrip is a bit too narrow IMO I have larger hands....thinking shooting gloves or another grip....

I have a GP100 .357, and I installed the standard rubber Monogrip. I liked it.

I got to thinking about the TAMER, and had questions very similar to your questions.

I emailed my questions to HOGUE....we exchanged several emails. I was NOT happy with their overall response. They didn't really answer my specific questions, which I asked more than once. They basically just kept saying....."Buy the TAMER and try it, we think you'll like it."

So far, I have NOT bought the TAMER, so I don't know if I like it or not!

Well, it's been a looooong time since I posted this thread and I thought I'd update it in case anyone ever has the same question.

I purchased the Hogue Tamer grips and like it a lot.

The Tamer grip is as wide as the widest part of the regular monogrip, but most of the Tamer grip is the same width from top to bottom. This takes out the very pronounced palm swell of the monogrip.

The tamer grip is thicker front to back than the monogrip making it feel better to me. It fills the hand much better.
The top of the Tamer's backstrap has a small shock absorber made of a soft squishy material. Because of this it is thicker at the top of the backstrap than the monogrip. This changes the grip angle a little compared to the monogrip and a lot compared to the factory grip. The grip difference between the factory grip and the Tamer is akin to the difference between a Glock and a 1911.

The change in the grip changes the way the gun recoils. When you shoot the gun it comes straight back more instead of rotating the muzzle upward.
The result is more recoil pushing back, but the felt recoil is less because of the Tamer's squishiness. Less rotation means much less friction between the grip and your hand.

I'm kinda undecided if I like a heavy recoiling gun that rotates vs comes straight back. However, I do like the way the gun points much more than with the factory grip.

Overall I'd say the factory grip is better than the monogrip because of the monogrip's stupid palm swell and overall width. The Tamer is better than either.

I used the factory grips for many years and had no complaints. This year I found one of the wooden panels had a split on the inside, so I got the Tamer. I liked the feel of the Tamer over the other Hogue grip.
