Last weekend I took 2 new rifles in 22 250 out to bust some Tannerite and to test the accuracy of the Hornady round. I took my chrony and some 50 gr. Superformance varmint and some Prvi Partizan 55 grain. My rifles are Savage axis 22 inch hunting rig and a Cabelas special FV12 26 inch barrel.
I believe the chrony is pretty close on readings as I use Nikon scopes and the Nikon Spot On App
and have found it reliable across many platforms and many calibers.
The Privi 55gr. Averaged 3501 fps. Out of the 22 inch axis, and 3633 out of the 26 inch rig.
Both less than the published spec of 3680.
The 50 gr. Superformance clocked at 4179 fps out of the 22 inch and 4343 out of the 26 inch rig
Basically the SFV is an inch high at 100 and zero is 300. This proved out and we were popping the Tannerite at 350 yards that it was almost too easy. Question is: Will that velocity burn out my barrels or should I believe Hornady that says that it will not shorten my barrel life? Did I get an unsafe lot of ammo? Oh 4343 is really fun. Could see my bullet hit the target before I lost the sight picture @ 300 yards. Wow.
Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks

SuperFormance ammo is incredible. My M70 "Summer Blast" .22-250 seems to prefer 50 grain rounds. The 35 grain are okay, but not great.

Throat errosion is the type of "barrel burn out" you have to worry about with rifle barrels. BTUs of heat are produced will be determined by the amount of powder burned
higher pressure of a specific load increases heat transfer, so a 6.5 creed will have more throat erosion than a .308. Cartridge design will also have a play in pressure. Machine gunning or firing twenty rounds in 15 minutes gets a barrel really hot obviously, and will wear the throat down. Bore diameter is a factor too.

Agreed. I have always thought that "to hot" is when you lay the inside of you forearm on the barrel. And it is uncomfortable then it's time to stop for a cool down. The heavy FV12 that's about 8 shots in succession with reload. Axis 3 shots. It's hot.

ok well looks like you're ahead of the game. I mean it depends on a lot, but the average barrel life is around 2000 rds. That depends on your opinion of acceptable accuracy and can + or - depending on what and how you shoot. I've shot a rem factory barrel out in 600 rounds doing nothing particularly heavy to it, and I've had a 6.5 creed barrel running good past the 6000rd mark so..with match shooting...depends on the variables. As far as superformance, I can't be sure compared to the ammo you have listed, put if you look up the pressure data for you load and its on the high end...expect it to wear that throat faster...then it becomes a matter of if you think that's worth it.

I got 4343 out of the 50 gr. I also have some of the 35 gr. Will report after next weekend on velocity. The
50 gr. Is advertised as 4000. Hornady advertises that SFV is no harder on your barrel as standard vel.
I think Klint might have the answer I'm looking for. Speed will increase wear. But for a few rounds fired slowly. 4343 and a point blank range of 350 yards is a lot of fun.

It's the amount of powder down the tube that determines your barrel life. Period. If hornady uses 38.6 gr to get 4000fps, and federal uses 36 gr to get 4000, then hornady will burn up your barrel faster. Since you're using factory loads you can really only guess wildly or pull one apart and see how much powder you can weigh out of a case, exact name of powder too will be irrelevant....
