Supporting the shooting sports means helping those who protect us as responsible gun owners. NRA does serious work. Sadly, not all responsible gun owners engage in support activities for the NRA. If we don't all come together and help, we will eventually lose the NRA and we can't let that happen. I hope we can get 100 percent of this forum into NRA membership.

Gun rights and Gun sports are associated. Gun sports enthusiasts are numerous. It is numbers from all facets of gun ownership - to include Gun Sports Enthusiasts - that can make a difference in the overall picture. Go figure.

I won't support an organization that won't support our right to own even so called "assault weapons"
The NRA is for gun control. And yes, people who engage in the gun sports are liberty loving gun owners like the rest of us, however the 'Fudds' are the ones who think the only purpose to own a gun is for sport. I can't agree. And the NRA is nothing but a bunch of Fudds who think "America is about fishing and camping"
Sure that was a glorious image in days gone by, but Boy Scouts and weekend lake diving isn't on most citizens hobby lists anymore. We have a far more diverse culture, and guns are a hobby that are for everyone, regardless of their political, religious or status views. The mentality of the people who think guns are only for "a few good people" are elitists who are bringing about the destruction of liberty. If we wish to be united, we need to change the NRA leadership and kick out the elitist Fudds

Here we go.....

No, here YOU go. I ain't goin' out that plane door with YOUR parachute.

OK, I'll add quickly that, if you doughnut like the NRA, just substitute ''GOA'' , ''SAF'' or similar, in your mind for the sake of this conversation.

PEACE to one & all:thumbup:

Before this thread gets locked down (which it will, probably soon), i will tell you that there will be a series of self righteous, indignant individuals who bash the NRA.

I’m 68 and have seen many, many attacks on gun rights. The only reason we still have our firearms is due to the NRA

Gun rights are not about "sports."

On this, we agree completely.

OP, “Gun sports” are a secondary or even tertiary activity that people look to because they are the least “scary” and easiest to understand when it comes to application of firearms use to individual rights. They are also the very least thing the NRA should be concerned about. The NRA has endorsed GCA ‘68 as well as other gun control initiatives. They’ve done this sort of thing in an attempt to get ahead of and even influence how those pieces of legislation were drafted. Now, we have similar sentiment from gunowners regarding UBC’s and other things liberals want to see enacted. Betcha fur NRA is going to want to get in on that action at some point, for the same reasons.

Support whoever you want, but never, ever trust that they have YOUR best interest in mind, and never, ever, accept what they say without your own research.

I don’t consider myself self righteous, or indignant, but I’m not a big fan of the NRA of today. That’s not to say they don’t do any good. What I will, and do do is show people that come visit us from the big city a different side of firearms than they get typically. Many of them fire their first firearm with me. I set up targets and we target shoot for fun. We’ll launch clay pigeons and have some shotgun fun. If they are so inclined, we’ll hunt squirrel, deer, bird or hog on my land in the evening and morning. We shoot beautiful guns that are older than they are, sometimes twice as old. They leave with a different perspective on firearms. They realize that they aren’t just for killing people in urban areas like the media would have you believe.

That’s what I choose to do. By all means, if you want to be a member of the NRA, send them your money. I’ll use my money on ammo and targets, and teach people that there’s another side to firearms than the one they typically see.

I am an NRA life member. While I don't agree with every position they take, they are the elephant in the room when it comes to the 2A debate at the state and federal level. Other groups may be more supportive of certain issues, but the NRA spends the most money and time lobbying for us by a huge margin.

What institutions/organizations, don't have flaws?
I see the NRA as an asset to gun owners. It may not always pay out in big dividends, but they are a mostly positive voice for us.

Speaking as a life member of the NRA, I have to say that I'm disappointed (to say the least) that the NRA leadership has turned into a self-perpetuating, self-aggrandizing cabal that is more interested in its own personal profits than in truly fighting for gun rights. It's past time for another "revolt in Cincinnati" but LaPierre & co. has stacked the deck to prevent that from happening. In the meantime, I'm not contributing another dime to this corrupt organization.

I don't fault the NRA for trying to have input into the process, but they are going about it very badly. (Example: the bump stock fiasco.)

I am watching the NRA to see if they will move back in line to their roots, and quit demonizing everyone that has a (D) in front of their name, and show some actual fight against the bump stock ban. In the meantime, my meager contributions this year are already double what I did in the entirety of last year. None for the NRA (yet, anyway). My money has gone to the GOA and SAF due to their national fight, and the VCDL for local.

I tried to be a bit more subtle in my condemnation of them, but you pretty well summed it up.
