It really takes a pretty dramatic difference in Db for the human ear to pick up, many times it's a difference in tone that is more noticeable.
I've got 4 different rimfire cans and have heard another 1/2 dozen in person, ammo and host play a big roll in how suppressors sound.
That little SC 22 can will be very quiet on a rifle with subsonic ammo and there won't be a huge difference going to a longer can. you'll need more volume to get quiet on a pistol so they'll be a more significant going to a 5 or 6" suppressor.
Similar results will happen with centerfire cans.
