surface rust?

My ar 15 seems to keep accumulating some light surface rust on the rear portion of the bolt (as in that downward slope behind the gas rings)... Does not appear to hamper reliability or accuracy but having rust on a gun drives me crazy. I've never had a gun continually rust in the same spot before... How do i prevent this? No amount of oil seems to help.

Weird?!

I would take some steel wool or Emmery cloth and use Breakfree CLP to remove the rust or even WD 40 works (maybe better for removal) as a penetrant for removal. The go back and use the Breakfree as a protectant. The only place I have ever seen the beginnings of rust was by the flash hider on an AK. I had shot corrosive ammo and did the normal cleaning but did not clean the threads on the flash hider; So I cleaned then oiled with CLP and the rust has never reappeared.

'Polish' it off with FLITZ. It will remove the rust and leave behind a protective coating and the rust won't come back.

Have not seen it on AR's but have seen a red deposit on some auto shotgun gas systems. Looks like rust but is a deposit from the powder. Could be the same on your AR?

Keep all bare steel surfaces oiled. Not "heavily" oiled. Just oiled. Check it frequently to make sure there is some oil on there. It will blow/burn/evaporate off. You must replenish it.

I shot some Brown Bear ammo in my 308 AR and noticed during cleaning a reddish tint to the carbon in the same area. It was not rust, but powder residue as far as I could tell. Other ammo did not leave this. Maybe you have the same problem?

I use Mobil 1 engine oil liberally on my bolt and the carbon deposits seem to just wipe away when I use WD40 to clean it. No rust problems for sure.

I got some break free clp and applied it to the whole bolt carrier group. Works like a charm everywhere except that one portion. It appears to be almost a band of that light rust. Right on that slope. I shot 3 bullets while hunting and when i pulled it out the whole carrier group was just fine except for that one area was bone dry again. Not sure what's going on.

That "one area" will always be blasted free of any oil you choose to put on it. It is subjected to the full fury of the hot gases when you fire the gun. It is usually covered with soot from the burning powder---and some brands of ammo give it a reddish "rusty appearance." It can actually be rust, but I would say only after a very long time of sitting and not being cleaned.

I have found that if I coat my bolt with Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil that it will be lubed and protected even after a year of sitting in a corner. (It doesn't evaporate) And the bolt cleans up very easily with WD40 after use. Also attempting to get ALL the carbon from this area is totally useless and it will be right back at the first use.

CLP is a multi purpose chemical and at best only does a minimul job of any of it's duties. ClLP = cleans,lubricates,protects A dedicated protectant or oil will do better at keeping the rust away. just my 2 cents worth.
