My buddy and I picked up 1000 rounds of Venezuelan CAVIM 7.62x51 NANTO for $350. It’s 1991 production and still in battle packs. We split it and each got 500 rounds for $175.

I opened the battle packs and the ammo looks great and is all the same lot number. I’ve had CAVIM 7.62 before and it shot pretty good, but I shoot it all up about 10 years ago.

I repacked it in a 50 cal. can and will most likely be shooting it in my two FR8 rifles.

I bought a 1000 CAVIM when it first came in. It was really trucking in a douglas match barrel, a bit hot. In a GI barrel, still a little hot, but OK. In everything I shot the ammunition, the groups were awful. However, the brass was good, and I have shot some very good groups with the reloaded brass.

M1A National Match 1/10" douglas
150 gr FMJBT CAVIM 90
8-Oct-01 T= 65-70 F

Ave Vel = 2893

Std Dev = 9
ES = 28
Low = 2879
High = 2907
N = 10

M1A HRA 12/60 Chrome Lined Barrel
150 gr FMJBT CAVIM 90 ball
29-Apr-04 T= 70 ° F

Ave Vel = 2798
Std Dev = 6
ES = 24
Low = 2787
High = 2811
N = 11

Group Size awful

I had a case of that about 14-15 years ago and shot most of it in my CETME. Man was it good, consistent, and accurate. I tried some in my Rem 700 and it shot better than Fed GMM for me. Still have the wooden case it came in, but no more 308’s to shoot. :(

The Indian 308 is to be avoided, even the brass is crap.

i had some linked 7.62mm CAVIM ammo with a coating designed to slow the cyclic rate of M42 machine guns. Could not pull the bolt back after the round was fired. In order to eject the round i stomped on the bolt handle of my Model 700 rifle.

how long do you think it will take before the bolt breaks off?

I bought a lot of those battle packs when they were $20 each and still have some around loose somewhere. Always worked well enough for me in any FR-8, Ishapore, Israeli conversions and AR-10 rifles I've had.

I pick up 7.62x51 brass when I can. When I hit 500 cases I'm buying a rifle.:D

I just picked up about 50 pieces of that stuff today from the brass bucket at our range. I wasn't even sure it was 7.62x51 because there was nothing on the case but CAVIM 93.

Timely post, now I know what it is.

Whatever happened to the surplus 30:06 ammo that was available at a cheap price? I need some. I'm willing to buy from an alien Venusian if the price is right. I seem to have lost my ticket to the ammo bazaar. While at Knob Creek a year ago.... I asked, Do you have any 9mm Makarov? NO! Do you have any 7.62 by 25 Tokorov? NO, how about a rusty Russian bayonet? NO Obsolete????
I now have a cardboard sign: "Will work for surplus ammo"

Gunny please let us know how accurate it is for you. I have never shot that particular stuff but my experience is the NATO ammo or military FMJ bullets as a rule are not actually THAT accurate to begin with. Just good enough and reloadable brass for that price is however a good deal.:thumbup:

I still have some CAVM socked away and found it to be good ammunition.

Nice find there Gunny.

I had some years ago that shot pretty good. It’s not match quality by a long shot but, if I remember right, it would do 2” five shot groups at 100 yds.

2" for surplus ammo is not too shabby for sure. Hope this batch is just as good. I am still shooting off that 12K of tracer pulls I got for the price of shipping some years ago. Those average 3" at 100 at best--more often 4.5", but they will hit the gong just fine for me.:thumbup: Taking a while to shoot them up as I only shoot them in the winter with snow cover to be safe. FWIW about 15% light off and they needed to go quite a ways longer than 100 YDS to see it happen so I just use them as cheap plinking stuff.
