Anyone know who has surplus 7.62X39 still in stock?

I was planning on buying some of the Yugoslavian ammo on stripper clips from SOG. I called yesterday and they are out of stock. I found one other web site offering it and they were out of stock. Looking around yesterday, I couldn't find any surplus or Wolf anywhere. Last night, Sportsman's Guide was still showing they had Wolf at reasonable prices, but I was hoping for something different as I already have some Wolf ammo. I saw Wolf and PMC at the gun show last weekend as well.

I am just curious if anyone knows any local guys that still have some surplus in stock. Otherwise, I will have to buy more Wolf or buy some PMC or domestic. Thanks.

A lot of the local stores are complaining that they can't get any 7.62x39. Many of the internet suppliers are out also.

Theories of why abound, but so far I have not heard any adequate explanation for it.

I saw the Wolf on Sportsman's Guide, but I was hoping to get another brand or some brass. I will get more Wolf before I get Olympic or some brand I never heard of.

I'll check ammobank later at home. That site is blocked at work. Thanks.

I was told that most of the imported Ammo comes in via boat through the New Orleans Harbor. Due to Katrina and the recovery in the area, supplies are limited to whats on hand. I would venture to say that given a few more weeks everything will be back to normal if this is true.

Okay, I'll add a rumor that I heard. This comes from a friend that went to the SAR show last weekend. He said he was told that our .Gov is buying up all the 7.62x39 and shipping it to Iraq for the Iraqi Army.

Okay, let's hear yours.

I've seen the Iraq rumor on here a few times already. I know guy out of Beaumont that has Wolf. I just found his number again and will have to call him and see where he will be this weekend.

Rumors I've heard:

1. US gov buying it all to send to Iraq and Afghanistan
2. Al Qeida buying it all
3. Post hurricane distribution probs
4. Shadowy anti-gun types holding it up in customs
5. After the AWB expired, everyone and their brother went out and bought AK's, and bought all the ammo up.
6. Wolf and other manufacturer's just plain can't keep up with demand
7. " "" "" "" not making as much because it's too cheap to be profitable

Some of these make some sense, others are just plain silly.

Glad I only use 7.62x39 as a plinking round.
Still though, I would like to be able to shoot my SKS a little. Anyone have any new info about this?

You may already know, but just in case: the Yugoslavian ammo is corrosive so be sure to clean right after shooting if you buy it.

"Has anybody tried asking Wolf?"

What, are you looking for a job as a P.I. or something? Why go to the source when you can pass rumors around all day?

Asking Wolf. Sheesh... Trying to ruin all of our fun. Grumble Grumble

Actually, I have seen Wolf around, I was just wondering if anyone could locate the surplus ammo. The gun show that comes around Pasadena,TX once or twice a month has not stopped carrying Wolf though the price is a little higher.

I have Wolf ammo now. I was hoping to find some other ammo I could shoot to compare, preferrably brass. I guess if I wanted to spend extra money, that one guy had cases of PMC 7.62x39 for $180. Not sure if "reloadable" is worth that much to me right now. I have a few boxes so I'll see if it is more accurate. The PMC 5.56 seemed to do alright.

I didn't know the Yugo stuff was corrosive. Thanks dolanp.

Just fo fun I am going to try and debunk these.

1. US gov buying it all to send to Iraq and Afghanistan
That whole place is an arms depo, assuming we didn't blow up all the caches we found over there they should be set for awhile.

2. Al Qeida buying it all.
Al Qeida will take any kind of ammo they can get. Buying all the Wolf ammo the factory can churn out would be the same as me going and buying a 3000 lbs of fertiliser and 800 gallons of diesel fuel at once.

3. Post hurricane distribution probs
OK, depending on what port the ammo enters through this might be true.

4. Shadowy anti-gun types holding it up in customs
Wholesalers would be raising holy hell and would certainly let it be known that their shipments are being held hostage.

5. After the AWB expired, everyone and their brother went out and bought AK's, and bought all the ammo up.
Not likely all the ban ending really did is let us add the evil features back on and get new 30 round AK mags. I have seen more people buying ARs.

6. Wolf and other manufacturer's just plain can't keep up with demand.
Possible, but why would they be importing rounds that were not available earlier like .308 and 30 carbine. I doubt that they would reduce production of their "bread and butter" 7.62x39 to start production of other rounds that may or may not be in such high demand.

7. " "" "" "" not making as much because it's too cheap to be profitable
Actualy they get quite a good price selling it to us as compared to other places. We are a ligitimate buyer (No need to fudge records) and we pay in US dollars compared to suitcases of heroin.

I think the best explanation out of these is #4.

It probably coincides with the ATF trying to ban all the AK parts-kits that have been coming in.

They're worried about so many cheap "assault rifles" getting into the hands of the peasants and they figure that if they can't stop the flow of guns at least they can strangle the ammo needed to keep them running.

/No, my tinfoil hat isn't on too tight, why do you ask? :neener:

okay, i'll see your fed.gov buying it up and raise you a "maybe people bought up loads of it in fear of shtf after the hurricane woke 'em up." i can personally account for four crates of the yugo stuff.

on the .gov thing i can tell you that the ak ammo i've seen here issued to contractors, ana and asf looks identical to wolf but i don't recognize the headstamp. it is steel cased with the polymer coating that wolf has been using for the last four or five years.

Well, I am several thousand rounds away from running out, but it would be nice to know more is on the way. My latest AIM surplus catalog said that more silver bear would be coming in December. There has just been a ton of overseas demand they say. Supposedly the ammo dumps dont actually have that much small arms ammo in them.

Lots of old artillery shells and IED making supplies though!

Has anybody tried asking Wolf? They must have a customer service contact in the U.S, no?

I sent Wolf an email and this is the reply I got.

We currently have more 7.62x39 on its way. Right now it is in transit and should arrive in the beginning of December. Thank you for your inquiry and interest in WOLF Performance Ammunition.

Not a whole lot of information there, but an answer from the horses mouth nonetheless.

Good. The gun show supplier I was talking about said they sold the last of their 7.62X39 last weekend. I am not in danger of running out either, but it would be nice to know more is available.

yeah, I started to panic a little yesterday after I went through my ammo cans. I have less than 300 rounds. I've been checking around and it seems like everyone's out. That's what I get for always putting off ordering a can here and there. I don't want to go back to plinking with the .22...:uhoh:

I would think that the govt' would be contracting one of the stateside manufacturers of it, like Winchester, to assure uniformity. I doubt they'd be buying up piecemeal lots of surplus ammo of varying age and quality...?

cases of Yugo today at the gunshow in Tallahassee, FL - $230.00- that was the only 7.62x39 there in cases. Wolf in every other caliber was abundant.

There is another gun show in Pasadena next weekend so I will see what I can get. If I want to pay $230, I might buy a case of PMC that a guy was selling at the last show (~$180). I didn't really want to go that high. We'll see.
There is another show in downtown Houston on 12/31 so maybe we can find out if more ammo is on the way or not.

The local guy who usually has tons of Wolf said he sold his last case of Wolf 7.62X39 at the last show.
