My father-in-law and I are looking to purchase inexpensive 9mm for plinking and possibly CCW. I have found some of the surplus guns and am looking to you all for advice as to which to choose and where to get them. Here's what I've found:

Sig P225/P6 for $260 (with 2 mag and holster) @ Aim Surplus
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Sig_Sauer_P225_P6_9mm_Pistol.html

CZ-82 for $210 (2 mags and holster) @ AIM Surplus
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Czech_CZ-82_9x18_Pistol.html

FEG PA-63 for $100 (would want xtra mag and holster) @ JG Sales
http://www.jgsales.com/product_info...18-caliber,-vg-to-excellent-/products_id/1258

Polish Makarov for $180 (need holster) @ KeepShooting.com
http://www.keepshooting.com/firearms/handguns/makarov-bulgarian-pistol.htm

Any opinions on these? I would say that I am leaning towards the CZ-82 or Sig P6. The CCW factor is very secondary. We are just looking for a cheaper plinking guns as we both have larger revolvers that aren't cheap to shoot. Thanks all!!!

The 9mm Sig P6/225 is going to be a better range gun then any of the others.

It's a little larger and Sig's are very accurate.

9x19 ammo is a little cheaper then 9x18 ammo as well. It's definitely easier to find. You usually have to order 9x18 on line, but you can get 9x19 at Wal Mart.

I have a Sig 239 and a CZ-83. The Sig is much more comfortable to shoot. The grips on the CZ really accentuate the recoil for me.

I've fired a PA 63 a few times and I don't care for that design at all. The trigger pull, especially DA, is horrible.

The Sig is far and away the best of the guns you listed. There's no reason to get anything else from that list in my mind.

I have a CZ-82, and it is a modern double stack design and shoots very accurately. The 9X18 isn't in quite the same league as the 9mm if that is important to you. The P64 has a big following and is quite small. Not as fun to shoot as the CZ. I guess the only thing to do is to buy one of each!! P6and CZ together is still less than most new pistols on the market. I may have to see about one of the P6s myself.

I have the P225, it is essentially a P220 in a single stack configuration. BUT at about %50-60 of the price. Parts aren't that difficult to find, but they aren't exactly everwhere. In my mind it is still the best deal to find anywhere. I wanted to get a CZ82 or a PA-63, but they aren't quite in the same quality league as the Sig.

Anyways good luck

Of the four guns you listed, only the SIG is a locked-breach action.

The other three are blow-back actions, and will have a sharper feeling recoil then the SIG, even with the less powerful & higher priced ammo they shoot.

Get the SIG!
The others aren't even in the same ball-park.

Don't limit yourself to just surplus either, there are a lot of good used/police trade in 9mm models out there that really outperform those old makarov guns. You should be able to find many used S&W auto's for $250-300 that would be fantastic choices.

the CZ82 will probably be the most fun,but you'll probably have to buy your ammo online in 500 and 1000 round cases for it to be inexpensive.

You only listed one gun that is chambered in 9mm Parabellum, which is what most people refer to as a "9mm".The other three are chambered in 9X18mm Makarov, which is plentiful and cheap in bulk quantities, but can get really expensive a box at a time.

Good info all. This is my favorite forum on the web. (Sorry Ruger forum... no hard feelings) If I get one, it's gonna be the Sig. $16/100 @ Wal-Mart is hard to beat for ammo. Plinking with the .357 is getting pricey (I know I can save $ shooting .38, but I love the sound of the .357!).

Where can I go to find these? I'd be very interested in that. As would my father-in-law. USA made goes a long way for us. (Even though I just bought a Bersa .380) I'm gonna search the 'net now, but if anyone has experience from a particular dealer that has good service I'd be all ears.

Thanks again guys!

Fantastic site. I really like the compact .40 S&W they have available right now. Doesn't get me a 9mm for plinking, but hey... I can use it as an excuse to get 2 guns. One for CCW and one for plinking. :D

I'm curious what would happen in event an officer needs to run the numbers on your weapon (shooting, what have you) and he sees a Missouri State Highway Patrol engraving on the weapon?

I'd be leary they might think it was stolen.

GREAT site, though. Gonna save me a lot of money here shortly, getting a shotgun, handguns, etc.

Good point. But wouldn't the FFL transfer register that gun to you at that point? I'm not familiar with the process as I have never done it (only bought new and from private party). I would think that it would otherwise what is the point of all the paperwork right?

Anyone have any other sites for law enforcement returns?

+1 on the Third Generation S&Ws being fantastic choices and deals. I don't know where you can find them in Minnesota. I live in the Atlanta area and there is a gunshop in Smyrna that sells a lot of them, should anybody around here want to know. It is Adventure Outdoors on S. Cobb Drive. In fact, it is a great store to go looking for any used gun, because they have a wide selection and good prices.

A long way from Minnesota, though.........

Check out the features. A CZ 82 comes with an ambidextrous safety, ambidextrous mag release, three-dot sights, polygonal rifling and high-cap 12-round mags.

Any of your other choices offer that combo?

First time I shot one I was shocked by the accuracy and was shooting cheap surplus ammo. If they weren't surplus guns they'd cost about $600 new. Upgrading any of your other choices (or just about any gun) to equivalent levels will cost you about $300 to $400. You get that for $210 in the CZ...

Ammo supplies may be spotty, but if you buy a case at a time you'll find it isn't near as expensive as 9X19 or most other handguns. I buy a 1,000 at a time and it is the cheapest handgun ammo I get (cheap enough I've never considered hand-loading).

I consider the CZ a great gun. I've got a lot of good handguns, but only about four or five great handguns. Funny thing, two of them are CZs, come to think of it three of them are CZs.
