surplus sniper

I can say a couple of years ago . I bought a Carcano M38 that bubba got his hands on for less than seventy dollars. The bore is in excellent shape and I rebuilt the rifle to original military form. Since the rifle had 6.5 Italian Stamped on the top receiver ring. I decided to mount a scope on it. I bought a steel side mount from Kalinkaoptics for mosin rifles for forty dollars. Drilled and tap for the side base mount . Bought a high steel quick release mount for thirty nine dollars which allows me to load with the carcano clip into the rifle.I had an extra scope laying around in the shop and used it.Also I glass bedded the rifle to the stock. This rifle can out perform most new rifles . The groups are half inch groups very impressive.

Is that rifle what I think it is?

I was wondering the same thing, probably correct for that time, about 45/46 years ago.
Yep and that even looks likes the ad from Kleins. They used to advertise in gun rags all the time in the 60s. S&W Model 1917s were like $18.00. I think thats where he bought his carcano.

Acera, awesome job on that "surplus sniper rifle", just what the OP asked for...with a lot of work. Looks great! :)

Agreed, that is Oswalds gun...and we all know that it was accurate enough. The only one that I recall shooting was very slick and pretty darn accurate to boot.

WHOA!! clemsonu0219 and Maverick223, don't give credit where it is not due.

THAT IS NOT MY RIFLE, OR MY WORK. (But I wish it was :) )

It was from another board I participate in, and thought it would fit the OP's original question.

(But thanks anyway, :p )

Hmmm, tried to pull a fast one...did ya?

No not me, I thought I made that clear (edited to make it more clear). Will not take credit for something I did not do, nor would I want the owner busting me out and trashing me on the other board, LOL.

it can & has been done for under $300 many times. i have about 15 mausers that i've picked up for under $150 over the years. some of them were already drilled & tapped, add a steel tube weaver 4x or 6x scope & a set of mounts.
a couple of years ago when new swede m96 barrels were selling for $80 & turk k kales were selling for $75 you could have had the makings of one hell of a surplus sniper style rifle cheap.
add the swede barrel to the turk k kale, then find a used weaver 4x or 6x scope & a set of mounts & you were in business.

you can still put together a nice surplus sniper cheap if you take your time looking for the right parts.
