Surviving Disaster

That's a pretty neat video. I don't do TV so I appreciate the link. ... But "a small town shopping mall"? Small towns around here don't have shopping malls :neener:

I have seen a little of a couple of the shows. But I wonder how much liability the network and the producers are taking making a show like this. I agree that it's a good idea to put the information out there. There is also a show on the OutDoor network I beleive, called Best Defence. I haven't been able to catch many of the episodes, but I think they deal with more "private" situations. Self defence, home defence, weapons, etc.

Well, I think that the information that they are putting out there is unlikely to be used and if you use it and die, no one knows. If you use it and live, you will be convinced that the only reason that you did was because you used that information.

Kind of like in the army when they say "my training kicked in". In my experience, you either react in a positive way (live) or negative way (die). Training doesn't "kick in". When I say that I mean that you are ready to slam down the training program into the situation OR you are not. It will not kick in on it's own.

Only disagreeable thing on the home invasion one was not including the use of firearms. Other than that, a very good treatise on the psychological side of things.

And having an EDC knife on your person at all times would allow you to cut through those ziptie handcuffs. I think a flashlight on one's person would have come in handy in all of those episodes too.

Watched several episodes and stopped Tivo-ing it. While there may be a few good tips, the information is often poor and the scenarios and overly biased toward the survivors. I am amazed with each episode at how easily the host is able to rally fellow victims into action heros and how capable they turn out to be with a minimal amount of instruction and how well each of their efforts works, be it in stopping hijackers, getting out of a burning building, surviving an earthquake, or stopping terrorists at the local mall.

Folks,

Keep this on topic for S&T, or the thread is done... TEOTWAWKI/SHTF is not on topic for S&T.

I initially thought the same thing but then I realized that would be akin to the good guys in a horror movie effectively using firearms... it would be a very short show. There just isn't a way to work that in without either demonstrating poor use of firearms or significantly shortening the episode.

A couple things I found disagreeable on the mall shooting one:
Firstly, using the homade "suppressor" was silly. If there are active shooters in the area, firing upon anything that moves, the sound of the shot wouldn't be out of place. Seemed like alot of work for minimal gain.
Second, when they hit the freight elevator, they discarded all their weapons. I know the premise was that the cops would be using the loading dock to enter the Mall, but discarding all your weapons before you know for sure where the police are seemed a little shortsighted. If they had gotten to the loading dock and found more shooters, they would have lost any advantage.

Otherwise, I really like the series in generally. Alot of emphasis on self reliance in an emergency.

Reviving this thread since the show is still good and sadly just one season. Hope it comes out on DVD soon. Though, it is on iTunes and amazon for download now. Also still up on Spike TV's website. Now where's the DVD with commentary Spike TV? Hint, hint.....

I thought the homemade "suppressor" was a bit crude but the idea was you only needed a few quiet shots to clear the path to make your escape. Don't say you wouldn't be doing it too. You would to save yourself and your companions.

Also does anyone recognize where the mall they filmed the mall shooting in is located?

Surprisingly good advice about not hugging the wall but keep a few feet off it due to ricochets. Makes sense if you think about it and you bet the Seal's get shot at and tested it in real world.

Discarding your weapons would be the likely best idea since the terrorists probably wouldn't be holding the outside area due to cops guarding that area quickly (don't want thugs shooting up the neighborhood, set perimeter, etc...).

I haven't seen this show on Spike, but I will check it out.

Best Defense is a pretty good show in my book, I watch it regularly. They teach home security (strengthening doors, how to pick a safe room, etc.), situational awareness, armed and unarmed combat techniques (including using alternative weapons ie. - if a proper kubotan is illegal in your area), and some product reviews (gotta pay the bills).

EDIT - wow I just realized how old this thread is...

Was that a Houston PD production? I thought I saw it in another thread that said it was a DHS production. (I did see the Texas 30:06 "no guns" sign on the door, though.)
