04.02.2004 Altendiez (gz). - A married couple got involved in an armed robbery on Monday. Only today it was made public by the police after the investigations were finished. The couple had made contact with a car seller on the internet. He lured them to Altendiez with the negotiated price of 18,500 €. Here the couple allegedly was assaulted not only by the 25-year old seller but also by two other suspects with a taser, OC mace and a baseball bat. The husband, a 42-year old police officer, was able to draw his service pistol. He then fired a couple shots at the 24-year old Limburg resident. The suspect was hit in the stomach area but his injuries were not life-threatening. All three suspects were arrested later on the same day. The judge issued arrest warrants for armed robbery on tuesday.

Yeah... people over here don't realize that it can happen to anyone.

I discussed the matter with an Austrian friend of mine and he told me that he routinely carries without having a CCW permit in such situations. He was charged twice so far, but apparently unlawful carrying of a legally owned weapon isn't a big thing in Austria... first time all charges were dropped, the second time he was fined 180,- €...

BTW, even more lucky the police officer was one who had his head straight. I never met a cop who regularly carried off-duty. I didn't either when I was on the force. However, I already decided that I'll definitely carry whenever possible if I get into LE work again. Not only for safety concerns but also to make a political statement to my friends and family.
