SW 617

By 617 6 do you mean older six round versions or the new 617-6? I just purchased a 617 10 round .22 in 6". Looking over the available guns I saw some listed as "Target", "Masterpiece" and simply 617-6. The original model 17 Masterpiece was blued 6" and later the Stainless Steel 617 replaced it in the lineup. The dash(- #) were later added as specs changed over the years, now up to 617-6. I believe dash 4 or 5 introduced the key lock required in some states and all 617's now carry that feature. There is no Performance Center 617 .22 offered, so my guess is that the usage of "Target" or "Masterpiece" by sellers is a hold-over from the old model 17 name.

I think in the late 1980’s-early 1990’s, the 6” 617’s were often called “target” models, but the Standard Catalog of S&W #4 didn’t list any specifically named target 617’s other than the Special Target ones marked for export.

There were options like a wide target trigger and target hammers as the guys posted above that may also label a gun a “target” model, but not every gun with such options could always be a target-specific gun. (I have a 6” model 66-2 that has TT/TH that IMHO is much more a “target” gun than my 4” 57 with TT/TH.)

If it’s a nice one, the older 617’s were really well made revolvers.

Stay safe.

From "WIKIPEDIA"
It was designed as a target revolver and could be ordered in the 1960's from S&W with "The Three T's" : Target Trigger, Target Hammer and Target Grips. Standard barrel lengths were 4", 6" and 8 3/8". The 4" model 17-6 is infrequently seen, as S&W produced the almost identical, 4" barrelled, Model 18.

The op was asking about differences between Model 617 revolvers. The Model 617 was introduced circa 1992.

If I ever see another 6-shot 617 the salesman better have good reflexes or he may lose fingers when I snatch it away!

IMO, their build quality is far better than the 10-shot models. Wonderful guns, hope you find one.
