I am contemplating trading my exceptionally nice 6" SW 617 No Dash (no box, etc) for a "like new" 4" SW 63 no dash (complete w/box, docs, etc).

For .22s, I have in the stable already....
617-6 4"
17-1 (or dash 3? It's a mystery revolver.....) 6"
The 617-0 6" trade bait
Ruger MKII x2
GSG 1911-22

Would you make the trade? I'm thinking the 63 might be nice for my young (5.5, 3) boys to learn with.

Kit Guns are good for a lot of things 6" 617's arent good for.

But the reverse is also true.

However, for kid training?
I'd make the trade.

I can't imagine going through life without at least a Kit Gun or two!

I have a 34 and a 317 and wouldn't sell either one of them.

You have enough K-frame .22's, swap one out for the 63.

It's a great gun and fills a niche that's different enough to matter.

As you know both are very different and like said above, you already have a few M617's. i would go for the M63. A friend has one and it's a hoot-to-shoot! It's a very light and handy pistol, great for snake protection duty or even small game with the right ammo. (did I mention light and handy?)

I decided to pass on the trade because the particular 63 in question is "too nice". It would have been an even swap with us both paying shipping and FFL fees. With that, I feel I would have been way over invested in the 63. Besides, I'd rather have a shooter than a safe queen.

BUT, this has got me thinking that I'll sell off the 6" 617 locally and be on the look out for a 63 or 34.

I think your idea of selling the 6" 617 locally is good and pick up the 3" M63 which expands your 22 revolver accumulation in terms of use. Honestly, M63's are hard to find. I don't know if S&W is just behind on orders or they simply don't sell in my area and the dealers don't buy them to stock their shelves.

In my opinion, you already own the jewel which is the 4" 617. I have a Blue 4" M17 and M18 (and of course a 6" M17) that are my better Smith 22's.
