My friend is buying a pistol. He wants to know which is one is better pistol. SW Sigma or Taurus 24/7. I had both here with me so I showed them to him. He was unable to make up his mind. On one hand he liked Taurus with soft trigger and safety functions, yet on the other hand he like SW for the long standing reputation of the company.

What would you guys like to tell him about these two?

I had a 24/7 that I regret selling. It really was a smooth pistol and had fantastic ergonomics. The straight Eight sites require some getting used to. It really is a fantastic value. The only thing to be aware of is aftermarket products and new mags cost a fortune relative to the cost of the pistol.

I would give a 24/7 a thumbs up

Tough choice as IMHO these two are the best of the low end polymer guns. Let him shoot both, that should tell the tale that counts -- which does he hit better with?

If he can get over the Sigma's trigger, S&W customer service over Taurus customer service should be the tie-breaker.

In dry fire I rate polymer triggers: 24/7, MP, XD, Sigma but when shooting I rate them MP, XD, 24/7, Sigma. I left off Glocks as I don't shoot them well because they just don't fit me.

I didn't vote in the poll because he should choose after shooting both if at all possible.

I hate the straight-8 sights and painted the rear dot black to remove its distraction.

A gun with a reputation of being somewhat sucky from a company with a reputation for top notch customer support, vs. what's supposed to be an OK or better gun from, well, Taurus.

Hmmmm.

Not sure, honestly.

I've read a ton of good reviews in magazines on the 24/7 series. I've never heard anything other than complaints and :cuss: about sigmas on THR.

I am adding vote to Sigma just because i think sw is more durable.

You're not giving us much of a choice here. There are other guns in that price range.

That having been said, I voted for the Sigma. It will almost certainly have a trigger that grinds a bit, but that can be lived with. I used to own a 24/7 pro 9mm, and its trigger had so much dead travel on take up that it was just as bad as the Sigma.

Also, the 24/7's tend to shoot very low, even when using the cursed Heinie sights properly , and even when compensating for the low shooting accuracy leaves a LOT to be desired. You would have a better chance in a self defense scenario if you clubbed the perp with the Taurus or threw it at him. And range use? Forget about it. My friends are still laughing about the safety of the targets when the 24/7 was in use. Don't believe the hype on the Taurus website, there's no way that the pistols in the videos shown there came off the regular assembly lines. Don't believe the American Rifleman hype, Taurus is a big advertiser in that magazine and we all know how that works.

Taurus repair and customer service may be the worst of any major manufacturer. Good luck getting them to make good on their highly vaunted warranty policy, and even if they do keep in mind that shipping a gun is not cheap.

The 24/7's ergonomics are incredible, which turns out to be a bad thing, because people end up buying them because they feel so good in the hand. I would never even consider buying another Taurus semiauto. Apparently sometimes Taurus does build a decent pistol, but it's not the norm, and odds are high that you will get a lemon. Their designs are very interesting, but their quality control is miserable.

Sorry for not putting up more choices. Actually I live in Pakistan and so does my friend who wants buy. His budget limits him to these two, and so does the import ban on Pakistan. If we were in US it would be an entire different story. Here Taurus is for US$ 1100, and SW Sigma for US$ 1500.

I am a happy owner of a Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm. I would not hesitate to recommend it over a Sigma. 17+1 capacity is nice, the grip is great, and accuracy is reasonable. Mags are pricey, however.

Wow i can't beleive what you have to pay for guns. I will never gripe again about the prices here.

I have a new S&W Sigma. It is my second one. I sold yhe first after reading how bad they were. That first gun wasn't anything like everyone said. It was accurate and completely reliable. I regretted selling it. I wonder how many people read what some else writes and then talks trash about a gun they have never even picked up?

I bought a second Sigma and shot it 5 days ago. No jambs and very accurate. The trigger is not as bad as others would lead you to beleive. Its no target trigger but it is very useable without any work. I was shooting at 15 yards and hitting the smallest dots on a duelling tree nearly 100% of the time. These were about 2" targets.
I had no FTF or FTEs. My friends new Kimber 45 had several stoppages. I fully recommend the Sigma. I know nothing about the Taurus so won't comment.

By the way what does ammo cost there?

At those inflated prices I'd go with the 24/7. I doubt customer service for Pakistan is handled in the US for either gun making US experience with S&W vs. Taurus support moot.

OTOH, the US economy needs all the help it can get so get the Sigma!

Yeah, and how much of that has been unrelated to function but simply :cuss: about the heavy trigger? It's a characteristic of the design. S&W could make only a few small changes and really improve the trigger out of the box. S&W forum abounds with the specifics of how to do this.

I think S&W is going to have the edge but only b/c of superior customer service. I see these two guns as about even. Maybe you should let your friend fire both.

:what:

Why the heck don't we have a fainting smilie?:scrutiny:

Get the Sigma!!

There is abso-bloody-lutely nothing wrong with the Sigma!! :what:

I have the dreaded SW40F, the gun that caused Gaston's panties to spontaneously crumple into a wad!! :neener:

Despite assurances from the Dark Side that firing even one round from this gun would cause the entire universe to fold in on itself, resulting in the extinction of all life, NOTHING happened on that fateful day at the range!!!

The gun went BANG, the boolet went where I wanted it to go, and it dutifully readied itself for the next shot, and so forth for the entire 15 round mag!!! ;)

It was not quite the dangerous WMD that the Internet chatter said it would be!!!

I love the Taurus 24/7 Pro I have in .45acp. Out of the 14 handguns I have, it has become my favorite. I had some mag issues at first,a problem that is specific to the .45s, with some of the older mags. Sent them 4 mags, they sent me back 8. I have around 1 k through it now with no malfunctions. It is a very accurate, well made weapon.

The Sigma is also a good weapon. After some usage the trigger pull smooths out alot!

if it was between a m&p then it would be the taurus all the way, but i am just not a fan of the sigmas, yes s&w does have great reputation, and that would play heavily into the decision. but i think that i would be happier with the taurus in this situation.

I have nothing against the new Sigmas, but I have owned a 24/7 and I liked it. You would be hard pressed to find a more comfortable handgun.

Also, the 24/7's tend to shoot very low, even when using the cursed Heinie sights properly
It's funny you say that, because after buying my PT1911, I would like to put those Heinie Straight 8's on every handgun I have, save for the MkII's. I really, really like those straight 8 sights...

The cheapest 9mm bullet would be a chinese one for 50c. Some US bullets cost over 3$ a piece.
On the used glock option- we dont have such a thing. Glock cost 3500$ used to 6000$ brand new.
The vote seem to suggest Taurus, but other than hard trigger I am not seeing anything wrong with SW!
To me one is a fully loaded honda and the other is baseline Benz?

$1100 for a Taurus 24/7....50c per round of 9mm at the cheapest? man it takes dedication to be a gun guy in Pakistan!!! I admire you guys. It's one hell of an investment.

i have the sigma .40 and love it. i bought it used but nearly new with only 10rnds through it. and it was over $100 cheaper then the taurus millunim pro they had in .40 that was more used. the sigma has great ergononics with the 18 degree grip etc. easy to maintain and field strip. great shooter and the trigger does loosten up quite a bit.

i have shot the taurus and disliked the snappieness of it as well as it didn't have a full size grip like i prefer. thats why i chose the sigma.
