I found a 340 in 222, but want a 223- found the 223 bbl., but can I just install the 223 bbl on the reciever (will have gunsmith do it)? I know the magazine from 222 to 223 is different, but will the mag well on the 222 frame accept the 223 mag, which I realize may be slightly longer due to the longer case?

I'd really like to do the swap, since I have all the reloading setup for 223, but I could always buy some $15.00 Lee dies & cases in 222 (probably cheaper than bbl swap), but then I'd lose using the heavier bullets available in 223.

what would you do? The gun is less than $300, bbl is around $60, new mags are around $30.

Would I lose that much in staying at 222 vs. stepping up to 223? thanks

You wouldn't need to replace the barrel.

You can have it re-chambered to .223 for a small fee.
On the otherhand, .222 reloading dies are far cheaper then converting a .222 to .223.

The thing is though, the .223 is loaded to higher pressure then the .222, (50,000 vis 55,000) and the single locking lug 340 action is probably better suited to leaving it a .222.

As far as the performance gain?
Not a whole lot.

Many still consider the .222 to be more accurate, and as good or better for small varmint hunting. It is slightly quieter, burns less powder, and usually shoots really well.

looking at the thing after doing much research & getting opinions, I'll probably leave it a 222 & just get some nickle cases; I've already got the powder, primers & bullets.
thanks to all
