Savage 24v

you can always use slugs in the 20 ga barrel to hunt deer. glad you brought it home
mine is a 22 wmr over 20 ga. i sighted in the top barrel and just figured out where the bottom barrel was hitting (a good excuse to bust some clays).

luck,

A buddy just got a nice Savage 24v .222/20 gauge in his shop for $700 out the door. I've always wanted one of these in 20 g, but I'd rather have a .22 lr or mag or even a .223.

The gun is clean and in nice condition, but ... that .222.

As a gun in the woods I consider the .222 too much for rabbit and not enough for deer. Fine for the turkeys we have in abundance.

I'd hate to pass up being particular about the rifle caliber, but it isn't like I don't already have more guns than I can shoot to just scratch an itch.
I love the .222 as a target round and have a few of them as standalone rifles, but I also reload my own .222 ammo. It held the record for about 40 years as the most accurate round out there and is super soft shooting.

I like the combo rifles too but if I remember correctly that one is a single shot, and $700 was a little on the high end of he ones I looked at, though looking at Gunbroker right now that's probably a good price if the rifle is in good working condition.

.222 ammo is readily available online, but not nearly as cheap as .223 and projectile weights are more limited. You'd probably have to handload with a good hunting bullet for deer hunting. It may not be optimal for deer, but it would be adequate with the correct bullet for the smallish deer I mostly see here in the part of East Texas I hunt. Not sure how big the deer you see are, plus being a single shot one would have to make that shot count.

It would definitely be a conversation starter at the range or deer camp.

can't confirm this but I understand that the 24's Savage did chamber in 223 still used the 1 in 14" twist.

Man I'm such a dunce. I can confirm that some of the later model 24s chambered in 223 did in fact have a one in 14 inch twist. I know this for sure because I remember measuring the twist in mine. And mine isn't chambered in 222 Remington, it is chambered in 223 Remington. It actually shoots the 55 grain Vmax pretty well. I have some 40 and 45 grain projectiles that I plan to load for it. Just never got around to it.

The bores were good and a bullet test of the muzzle of the .222 was fine so I walked out with the 24v .222/20ga and a box of .222 in hand for $700 total.
I think I'll be quite happy with it.
Great!
I always like a happy ending.
The 24s are great camp/home/hunting/ truck guns. I really enjoy mine and hunt small game with it every year.

Pretty compact and portable when broken down in a take-down case.
