Is it against the rules to go from say a 1-4x for one stage to a more high powered scope for another? My local 3 gun matches have steel out to 600 on one stage and I was curious if I could put a higher powered optic on just for this stage.
Normally not legal. Most match rules both outlaw and uspsa have words to the effect that rifle (all guns) configuration cannot be changed after the start of the match. Even with lax rules it would be like running more than one optic which puts you in open.
Ditto. I think doing this would move you out of any production based class and put you in open. Plus I have never actually been able to swap optics out and have them be perfectly zeroed, even when placed in the same spots.
I would agree with not being able to change optics once the match started.
However at the one 3 gun match I participated in several years ago, some competitors using AR's had a scope mounted in the conventional over the receiver position and a red dot sight mounted at an angle on the hand guard. For close range stages they would cant the rifle 45 degrees or so and use the red dot for aiming. Check the rule book to be sure it's legal.
