well the K31 I received had a really bad stock. Hard to find a new stock so I used spray on bedliner and I really like it. Opinions?

8 years back or so Century did the same with Czech Vzor 52 rifles that came out of some nation that had used them and then used them again and then used them up. The stocks were terribly beat up, most with major repairs done. The Century "Wizards" (their term, not mine) used the bedliner and created "Commando" rifles. The finish didn't look bad, kinda synthetic. But, it didn't hold up real well and was prone to cracking and chipping.

I used some spray on bedliner on the handguards of my STG. It was the cheap stuff, and it started coming off within a few months. Just behind the gas block the stuff has been blown off, and under the bipod it's scratched off. It's one of those things that's on the "list" to fix.

Man, I'm really tempted by the K31. I have my C&R, they aren't that expensive, not sure when I'd ever shoot it though . . . Don't have any kind of "need" for one. Although I really do like straight bolt guns. . . . but my other rifles don't see enough attention as it is.

I didn't either so I bought two.
Buy one, you won't be disappointed. They are a unique rifle and the opportunity to get something like that for less than $100 can't last long.IMO - these K31's are one of the best bargains in C&R going right now. You can order them for $79.00 and have a great, accurate shooter that always seems to draw attention at the range due to the unique straight pull action. The bores are usually always great since the issue ammo for these rifles, Swiss GP11 is non-corrosive.
The stocks often leave a little to be desired however, mainly due to stacking them in the snow, the moisture tend to give the buttstock the "chewed on by a beaver" appearance. New replacement stocks can be had though if you look around. I know Numrich has them, but they are very expensive. Try a place called Tennessee Gun Parts, they have the best prices I've found on replacement parts and stocks. TNgunparts
BTW - I have five of them.

Buying a K-31 is a no brainer. Probably the only reason they sell so cheap is that noone on the continent makes commercial ammunition for it, though Hornady makes brass for it. The GP-11 surplus ammo isn't really badly priced, the last brick I bought cost $22 for 60 rounds, though I'm not sure how much the shipping would have been on the ammo alone becuase I orderd it with a rifle, rifle+ammo+shipping cost me $122 from AIM. The ammo is as 'match grade' as any ammo gets, and the rifles aren't too shabby for accuracy either.

One of the good things about wood is you can always clean it up. Even if its chipped or cracked, it can usually be repaired and made to look nice.
I have my share of painted plastic rifles, but that's just so sad for the wood.

Note-
The bedliner spray is Dupli-Color truck bed coating from PEP Boys.
I've tried several but this is actually great quality and lasting.
This afternoon I'm mounting an Aimpoint on the Weaver Tac Rail on the free float handguards and a forward assist grip. The collapsible stock came out nice too!

they are dead easy to disassemble even without instructions. Online there are manuals or instructions like here-http://www.swissrifles.com/
I stripped it down and smoothed the wood in the worst areas, cleaned it as well as I could and then sprayed it on. Just that simple. The metal bits like the barrel/stock bands etc. got regular spray paint. The only thing I didn't realize was that it won't fill in really significant dings, I should have used wood putty on a couple of spots.

There is always the Steyr M95, but in 8x56R, it's hardly more affordable.

Another reason why the K-31's have such nice bores is that if the soldier they were issued to did not take care of them, the soldier had to pay the price for the rifle to be re-barreled! That would motivate me to keep mine clean too! I've got to buy one of these and a Swedish Mauser before they are all gone.
Depends. If you're looking for center-fire only, then you're probably out of luck for affordble caliber.
However, if you don't mind thinking smaller, check this out: Biathlon Rifle
It's 22LR, I don't think you can get more affordable than that. The action is straight pull. One ofthe local deputies has one and he loves the thing. Very accurate with the right ammo (he swears by PMC Scoremaster ammo).
