I have a chance to get a used Ruger GP100 DA(no spur on the hammer) in 4". And since I'm not one to leave well enough alone I found some sources for extra Ruger GP100 barrels in 6" and 3" and gave some thought to acquiring them for switching them out. I've done it on my S&W 19-4 shooter(got three others in 19-3 and 19-5 that are mint that are safe queens) taking it's 6" barrel and swapping it with a 4" barrel with no issue after a few hundred rounds so far( I inspect the gun every thirty rounds or so for cracking in the forcing cone).
I was wondering if the specs on the GP100s are so unique to each gun this wouldn't be feasible or for that matter safe. If they require gunsmith fitting and I mean true precision to the .001 of an inch gunsmith fitting then I'd give up on the idea but if it's a simple fitting with caution for the play of the barrel and such than I'd give it a try.
Was just wondering if this is possible or should I just give up.
