Switching From 4064 for '06 - Suggestions

Have always been handloading 30-06 with IMR 4064. Looking to try something new that may be better just for grins. What are people's recommendations. 150 & 165g bullets. I've heard 4350 or 4831 are good choices for these weights. Both of these are recommended as best choices by several bullet mfg in the Loadbook.

I use Imr 4350 with outstanding results, my load is 56.8 grains of that with a 165 grain nosler accubond. Ive shot a few deer with these loads and they drop dead every time also this is the most accurate load i found for the 165gr accubond with 4350 powder.

Nosler agrees with you. They show IMR4350 as most accurate for 165g as well.

I originally started loading .30-06 with IMR 4350 just because the manual said it was good.
Since then I have tried many - many powders - and came back to IMR4350 - it just works!
And I've been reloading since 1972.
56.5 is my magic number - 165 & 150's.

Kind of depends on what you're loading for. 4350 is the absolute slowest you'd want in a Garand unless you've got an adjustable gas plug.

For Garands as well as '06 in general you can do well with either 4895 or Varget altho both 4895's are quicker than 4064 ... they meter a little better than 4064.
Other candidates would include W748, AA2520, H322.

I am loading the IMR 4895 near max with the Barnes TSX and have outstanding results for a hunting rifle.

I get 1 moa at 100 yds with H4895 but thats my rifle, not me

My long range load with a 30-06 that I shoot out to 500 yards is 57 grains of IMR 4350 with a 165 grain boattail bullet. A good deer load is 57 grains of IMR 4350 with a 150 grain boattail bullet. BW

I feel 4831 is too slow a powder for the 30-06 but 4350 is my usual choice. I use mostly H4350 and a 165gr or heavier bullet. With a 150gr bullet you might want to stick with 4064 or 4895. (IMHO of course)
