Hey guys, I don't own a 40, but I have been picking up range brass. I have found some cases that are swollen near the extracting rim on the case. I am assuming its an unsupported chamber like a glock. The primers are smeared like a glock to boot. Anyway, I was wondering if this is caused by reloading or does it happen to factory fired rounds too? I would likely trade this brass off for something I need, but I was wondering if brass that is swelled should be chucked or not. Thanks.

i think from what ive read its a glock trate i dont think it matters if its reloads or not... but wait for the more knowledgeable guys t chime in....

Happens to both factory and reloaded rounds (though the "bulge" can be more prominent in hotter loads) that are fired through a gun with an unsupported chamber. Glocks are known for this, but my S&W SD40 does the same thing too and also has a partially unsupported chamber.

Still reloadable, but the bulge needs attention. Lee sells a "Bulge Buster" kit that works great for fixing this. Redding also has a similar setup (the Redding G-Rx) that I would assume works fine but I've not tried it (it costs 2x as much as the Lee that works fine so I have no reason to :)).

I basically just run all my .40S&W brass through after its been sized. If it works out easier you can also run completed rounds through to shrink the bulge back down.

Its Glock brass for sure... I use the LEE Bulge Buster to remove that bulge and I reload them, however I don't continue to shoot them out of a GLOCK. I shoot them in a supported chamber and I don't have to bulge bust them anymore after that. Its just another pump of the press for me and I would prefer to get that brass at some kind of discount, if you know what I mean...

If you're going to trade it to someone for them to re-load, just accurately describe the brass and let them decide how to proceed. Since it’s range pickup, you can’t say whether it’s suitable to reload.

This post got messed up. I'll try again. I would just say its range pickup brass. I cannot say its once fired because I have no knowledge of this fact,it may or may not be. I have been looking for 9mm and 223/5.56. I pick it all up and sort it when I get home. Then wash, tumble and store.

Yes, factory .40's do bulge when fired from a poorly supported chamber. And yes, you can reload them if they aren't too badly bulged. There are also dies that are intended to remove the bulge as well. I load them all the time, and have had no problems removing the bulge with a standard resizing die.

I sort a lot of range pickups. The "swept primer" isn't all that uncommon and isn't limited to Glocks, unless there are a LOT of Glocks out there with round strikers?

Looks like these.
