I was given a SxS Shotgun, a Stevens Modell 311A. Both barrels fire when the first trigger is pulled. What is wrong, what needs to be done to correct this, and what is it likely to cost?

Thanks

A shotgun expert told me that probably means the sear angle/sear spring on the other barrel isn't right (it's set up too hair trigger) and it goes off from the discharge shock of the first barrel.

There is also a strong possibility that one barrel will fire when the gun is closed - especially if it is closed quickly. I had this exact problem with a Winchester Model 24 years ago, and it is serious accident waiting to happen. I suggest getting it fixed pronto!

I've seen more than a few of these in my shop. The problem is most likely a worn sear to hammer engagement. Do not fire this shotgun until you get it fixed. Unless you have experience with this type of problem, take it to your local gunsmith, it is not a job for an inexperienced person.
Good Shooting, John K

Thanks for the help. I will be taking it taking it to smith before I shoot it, but I wanted to know a llittle about it before that.
