My brand new synthetic stocked Savage Rascal seems to have a weird problem with the stock. The barrel seems to be free floated in the front, but if you press down on it, the barrel can wiggle up and down! I tried tightening the two hex head screws on the bottom of the stock, but no change.

Any advice on dealing with this? I tried getting it sighted in, but was frustrated even getting on paper at 50yds. And this is off of a solid rest! Which is extra frustrating, because I have a Savage Cub which shoots great (with a similar peep sight)

I spoke to Savage, who suggested taking it out of the stock and retightening everything. I did that, and really tried to snug the screws down. It wiggles less, but it still seems wrong. I have other rifles and none of them have movement like this!

I will try sighting it in one more time now that it seems a little tighter. I know that this rifle is not "match ready" but right now it can't hit the side of a barn. It's not encouraging teaching a kid to shoot when they can't hit the paper at 10 yards (but I couldn't either!)

I asked this question on rifles and didn't get a response, so I was hoping someone here could have some words of wisdom.

So the barreled action is moving within the stock, not just stock flex?

If you don't want to bed it yourself, send it back. Nothing else to do.

You are wasting time and ammo. As mentioned, either fix it by bedding yourself, or by someone else if you want, or send it back to Savage.

Fixed for now

I tightened the action screws as much as I dared, and sighted it in again. At the factory notched settings, the gun was about 10 inches or more off to the left and above the bullseye at 50 yards. I finally have it mostly dialed in, maybe a touch to the left of center, but at least it is now on. It will hit spinners and other action targets at shorter distances no problem.

The sights are really a lot better on the Cub than the Rascal. I wish Savage kept the same adjustable sights from the Cub. Although the rifle being tapped for a scope mount is interesting...

At least I don't have to ship it off for no reason. Let's hope it holds zero.
