TA01NSN ACOG on M4 carbine

My m4gery carries a compact ACOG (1.5 x 24) TA45 on the carry handle. Only down side is the price and for what it does--it's worth it.

Like the old Buick ad--"Ask The Man who Owns One". :)

As far as the Eotech vs ACOG goes, I can see going with an ACOG if battery supplies will be an issue.

Would you all say that the ACOG probably wins, hands-down, due to that regard alone, if you are going to be getting an optic for a rifle that is intended to be used in a security/support role in sub-saharan Africa?

I don't suppose if your batteries go dead in the middle of the Ivory Coast or Zaire or wherever, that you can just walk to the neighborhood Walmart and buy new ones, eh? Nor would I count on anybody dropping you a pack if by some outside chance you get some sort of supply drop.

The military is finding that extremes in climate affect the service life of batteries, even Ni-Cad batteries.
Huge amounts of the military budget are spent on replacement batteries for all kinds of equiptment now.

This is a large factor in the Marines and Army placing large orders for Trijicon optics in the recent small arms upgrade packages.

Our opponents run on simple solutions and willpower and our military is running on less than stellar modern technology.

The ACOG can be used to 600yds (and I have used my TA11 to that distance at Tiger Valley).

As for cowitnessing an ACOG, the ACOG is the closest thing ever made to a bombproof optic. No problems with electronic failure and you don't get washout usually (Certain amber reticles excluded) because there is an etched reticle backing up the fiber optic/tritium.

If you ever get into the rare position that your ACOG is disabled but your weapon isn't and your target is far enough away that you need irons BUT also close enough that you need them immediately then an ARMS mount or Larue mount will let you ditch the ACOG and deploy irons. FWIW, I have been running an ACOG since 2002 and have never needed to go to irons in about 10k rounds fired with that ACOG.

The TA31F can be used to 800(although I haven't used it at that range yet).

As for the QD mounts, my ARMS mount holds zero like a charm...

While at the range, I'll frequently want to use my irons, so I've detached quite a few times and I have not had to rezero at all.

i can't reliably hit 10" steel targets at 800 yrds with my TA31F-equipped AR. I can hit at 600 pretty routinely. Maybe if I had a bigger target... :)

its the "polytronic" system, which equip all of our military ranges.

A lot of microphones triangulate the impact point sound around the target, to perfectly localize it on target, and than show you this on the monitor.

That's a really cool set up. We use the same basic technology for sniper detection systems, but I've never heard of it used for training like that.

The TA31F can be used to 800(although I haven't used it at that range yet).

The reticle graduates out that far, anyway.

A TA01NSN can also hit out at (and past) 800 meters with some figuring of hold over . . . but that's on a range. Negligible percentage shot in the real world.

Ohler was working on a system like Shrug's five or six years ago for private sales. A friend was a tester, but I never managed to get out when he had it set up. He spoke highly of it.

I was joking about my age withthe earlier comment about not having anything digital. 1975. No PC and an apple was a piece of fruit, a Mexican full auto .22LR pistol or a communist city block organization.

We considered the "automatic" electric powered target setter on steel cables to 50 or 100 meters to be high tech.

Has anyone besides myself, mount an ACOG in front of an Eotech 552? I posted this on the AR-15.com forum and basically got laughed at. I originally purchased the ACOG to see if I liked it over the Eotech I had and just for the grins, used the ACOG as a magnifier for the Eotech. Worked out great! I can leave the Eotech off and look straight through it with the ACOG TA31F for distant targets. In close quarters, I turn on the Eotech . I find that at close quarters, the ACOG reticle is very small making it difficult to place it on close targets. However, with the Eotech on, the holographic reticle makes it very easy to sight onto a close target. Both reticles cowitnesses perfectly!
