tactical .22's

I went with the S&W 15-22 and have enjoyed it greatly. One of the most fun rifles I have owned to date. Not sure if it's better or worse than the Colt, but I wouldn't sell mine for what I paid for it. My S&W has been very reliable and as accurate as I could ask from a rifle I shoot as fast as my fingers will let me.

How about the new Mossberg Tactical 22? I am sure it is mostly plastic, but based on thier 702 Plinkster action and barrel. Collapseable stock, A2/Pic adapter, 25 rng mag. Anyone shot one? The price is pretty attractive, but I know you get what you pay for...

If you already have a regular 5.56 AR15 lower I'd recommend a dedicated 22LR upper; CMMG will sell you one for $350, Spikes and others make them too.

IMO, a 'tactical' .22 is a bolt action with a suppressor. That' the niche a .22 fills as 'tactical'.

Those above work well as sub-caliber trainers.

+1 on that. The .22 upper goes to the range every trip. After I burn up $50 in .223, the .22 upper comes out and the fun continues for $0.03/trigger pull;)

I have the Colt M4/22 and my S-I-L has the S&W. In my hands the Colt is a tiny bit more accurate than the S&W. The S&W is quite a bit lighter than the Colt. They are both a ton of fun and I would say pick one with the features and looks you prefer and don't worry about it.

CDNN had the Colt rifle sized model on sale for like $369 through today, (3/11/11). Can't beat that.

That is one fun looking gun. They go for around $250. That's only slightly more than a basic Ruger 10/22! I too would be interested in a review.

what about adding the gsg522 into the mix? Im gonna buy one of these soon, cant make up my damned mind

Either the S&W or Colt would be a good choice. I'd say handle both of them and you'll soon know the answer. Some of us like one, some the other. I went in ready to buy the S&W which was on sale but got derailed when I handled the Colt. Walked out with nothing and waited a while for a sale on the Colt M4 .22LR version. It's been a great rifle.

How about...
The SIG-522.

IMO, after handling/shooting them...
SIG SIG-522
H&K/Umarex/Walther HK-416
S&W M&P-15/22
Kel-Tec SU-22
ATI/GSG GSG-5
Colt/Umarex/Walther M-4

I'm trying to get a hold of the ISSC MK-22 to see how good it is.

Fun factoid...
-Colt licensed Umarex (airsoft/bb gun company) to make a .22LR of the M4. Umarex owns Walther, so they got help from Walther to make the Colt/Umarex/Walther M4 .22LR rifle.
-H&K licensed Umarex to make a .22LR of the HK416. Umarex took all the compliants about the Colt/Umarex/Walther M4 and brought it to Walther. They then made changes, which they incorporated into the H&K/Umarex/Walther HK416 .22LR rifle.
-So... H&K/Umarex/Walther HK416 .22LR = product improved version of the Colt/Umarex/Walther M4 .22LR

S&W, no question.

Go watch the Youtube video on taking apart the Colt and you will agree.

It is very apparent that all colt did was say "here is the external dimensions of an AR, lets make a rifle look like that", where as S&W said "lets take an AR 15 and build a 22LR AR as like it as we can". As such the S&W functions very similarly to an AR in regards to the trigger and everything save the gas system/bolt (the S&W 15-22 is recoil operated like most 22lr semi-autos).

The Colt is just about identical to the real thing on the exterior. In my experience it is not as reliable as I would like. The smith and wesson seems to get better reviews. I really want to try the Smith so I can compare the performance.

if you're not limiting it to AR pattern, this one is a lot of fun...

Otherwise I like the Sig 522 or S&W MP15-22.

I have a Spike's. That is some good stuff.

Noot interested in the COlt after the reviews I have seen.

No Colt koolaid here....

I went with the Smith. After check out both of them, I felt that the polymer used in the Smith as better than the pot metal used in the Colt. The mags for the Smith are everywhere are are pretty cheap. They are also well made and easy to load. The biggest plus for me is that I'm an AR nut and have tons of AR parts floating around. My Smith is sporting a JP trigger, thanks to the fact that the FCG is compatible with those for the AR15.

My only regret is that I didn't wait for the model with the flash hider attached.
