Danner

The danner Ft Lewis boot. They are a bit pricey, but I never complain about spending money on a good pair of boots, because if your feet aint happy, you aint gonna be happy.

I think so

To the best of my knowledge they are US made... But the last pair that I bought was about a year ago.

The Danner Striker (or any of their other Terra Force variants) are not made in the US. They may be made in China, I'm not sure. But if it's one of those pseudo-sneaker type boots from Danner, chances are it is not US made.

That said, the Fort Lewis boot is definitely made in the US. I have five pairs of Danners (Explorer, Patrol, Blackhawk II and Edgewood GTX) and all are made in the US.

My Agitators (I know, stupid name), were made in China. As much as I dislike the Chinese, they have been making footwear for 5000 years so I'll give them that. They were grippy enough for light mountaineering.

I hear their banjo pickers are handsome :D

Ok gotta ask..just what the heck makes a pair of boots "tactical"? I mean c'mon tactical boots. It even sounds rediculous.

I just had to look at the website though. Appears a "tactical" boot is simply a standard boot of the hiking, hunting or work style that's either black (for those secretive night operations) or a duel tan color (for desert environments no doubt) So I ask again...what makes these "tactical".

Another vote for Danners.

I've owned two pairs of Ft. Lewis Go-Devils. I got 7 years out of the first pair and wore them completely out.
I've got 9 years now on the current pair and they're about due for a resoling. I've also taken much better care of this pair than I did the first ones. They still look new inspite of the abuse and mileage.

Feet are too important for crappy boots.

Matterhorns appear to be a cheaper version of the Danners with the same or similar features and are approved by DOD as alternative footwear, but I don't have any experience with them.

Hopefully someone else can weigh in on the Matterhorns.

If you know an active military member, you can have them pick ya up a pair on the cheap from the Clothing Sales store. :D

Black isn't for night operations anymore. Seems that black glows like fire in the newer generation night vision devices. Looks like all the "real" tactical boots will now be a brown or tan sueded leather!

We are issued Thorgood boots that are made in China. Their okay. I wouldnt buy them with my own money.

as opposed to bells and whistles on rifles i.e. tacticool i think tactical here would mean boots a policeman would wear on patrol or a military unit would wear in garrison. loggers boots, engineers boots, motocross, road racing, cowboy are all other useful boots, but are clearly not tactical.

+1 for Danner

I have had a pair of Bates DOD boots. ( NOT the same ones that the general public can buy) those are great. I will say though, my Danner Acadias have been through some stuff and always stand up to whatever I dish out. Danner are made in Portland Oregon BTW.

Matterhorns

I have a pair of matterhorns that I bought at the Clothing Sales store on Ft. Knox in Janurary 1992, before shipping to Germany. I also used them as a SF candidate here in the hills of Utah, and honestly have only pulled them out prior to hunting season to make sure they're soft for the last few years. In the last ten years, I have kept them clean, and applied mink oil a few times. The stitching is holding up, and the inner shape is still very comfortable. 100% waterproof, still warm, the soles are beginning to show significant wear.

I know they are the govt contract of the Ft. Lewis boots, and I've wanted to try those. If they are better than these boots, they must be very good indeed.

I like Bates I have worn them over the last 10 years in the steel toe variety and I love them. I have always been issued Bates and 3 years ago I thought I would buy myself a pair of Bellevile's boy that was a mistake they were pretty uncomfortable. So from a guy who wears these boots for about 10-18 hours a day 5-7 days a week for almost the last 10 years go with Bates.
