And, unfortunately, one that I haven't been able to work on much past the design stages.

The idea was to build a carrying case for any number of takedown shotguns (but chiefly the Winchester 97 and 12). Prior to this animal, I found two types of cases. First the regular type, which require the shotgun in question to be assembled for transport...which more or less defeats the purpose of a takedown gun. The second tended to be hardsided cases which, while shorter than their fullsize counterparts, tend to be to bulky for any convenience.

So I came up with this.

What we have here is a tri-fold roll. Two sleeves on the inner folds keep each of the two major subassemblies. Presumably, these would be lined. Each sleeves has two snaps to keep the protective flap closed. The leftover piece in the center can be fitted to carry ammo, or cleaning stuff, or anything you might feel the need to carry along. I had planned to have this section available in several configurations, with the straight ammo option depicted.

Once rolled, the two ear flaps at either end close and belt around the middle, in effect closing the case to the elements and better securing the contents. Externally, the case features a D-ring at the end of each ear, a carrying handle, and one large pocket (which may yet multiply into several small pockets.

Construction-wise, I'd intended to build the thing out of waterproofed canvas, preferably in a khaki color. The snaps would be similar to the type on old USGI web gear, with the securing straps leather. I understand this might drive up the production cost somewhat, but I wanted a classic look in a modern item, and I felt that it constitutes a borderline atrocity putting an old gun in ballistic nylon.

At any rate, I've run this thing past the non-gun people. Some took a passing interest, and it occurred to me I was fishing in the wrong pond.

So...what do the gun people think?

*My apologies for the poor quality of the drawing - it had to be shrunk to fit, and it's somewhat blurry as a result.

I think I don't take apart my old Winchester/Savage/Browning take-down guns any more often then necessary to prevent wearing out the interrupted threads.

With the exception of O&U and S/S double guns, the less often you take them apart, the longer it is before they get worn out and loose in the joints.

But, that's just me.
