Howdy, folks. Ever since I started getting into weapons I have HATED the 9mm. One day the sergeant in my shop decided that the NCO's and junior enlisted need to go to the local range and bond. We rented a few 9mm pistols because the ammo was cheaper. After shooting it, I changed from hating 9mm to prefering .40 S&W. I came home on leave to my folks' house and shot a few more 9mm pistols. After talking with my father and evaluating what I need for a handgun, I decided that I now love the 9mm. So much that yesterday I bought a Ruger P89. I don't need a weapon for home defense because I can't have one in base housing, and if I will ever have to use it, I can put some hollow points in it and it should be effective enough. I mostly take it to the range and so since 9mm is cheap and puts holes in targets. That said, to everyone that likes 9mm who I have commented negatively to, I'm sorry. I have fallen to the dark side.

I hear you, Aaryq. I hated 9mm for a long time, too, based on its performance in a number of shootings I investigated and prosecuted. Then I bought a Glock 19 on a whim, and loved how it shot. I started researching the different 9mm loadings, and found that alot of them are solid performers. I noticed that in alot of my cases, 9mm did very well when it was a quality loading. Now I'm a 9mm fan...I just pick my load carefully.

i also like the 9mm.. and .38spl...
I also like .40 and .45..

for 9mm, Win 147gr SXT, Win 147gr SilverTip HP are my "happy place" loads..:D

It is always nice when someone can admit their past mistakes. Although I never hated the 9mm, I did convince myself for a while that I needed a .45ACP or .40S&W chambered pistol. I am now back to the 9mm and it is by far the semi-auto caliber I like the most.

Whats not to like about it. Its a cheap, accurate, effective, and soft shooting round that is chambered in many great pistols.

If gang bangers around the country shot .45 pistols sideways above their heads and mostly shot each other in the gut and legs, it to would have a bad rep as an ineffective round.

Had

a few 9mms S&W 39, 59, didn't care much for the guns and the ammo was just what to feed them. Got a Browning P-35 (High Power) and loved the pistol but was never too happy with any of the 9mm stuff. I guess packing an M3 and a 1911 and knowing what the 45 was capable of I considered the 9mm as just an expensive substitute for 22 long rifle hollow points. Ya' want cheap go with the .22 ya' want knock down try the .45 or a 10mm 200gr from double tap. As the fella says, a 9mm usually expands but a .45 never contracts.:)

To be honest, besides designs like the 1911 and Sig P220 I think the majority of the best handguns on the market are chambered in 9mm. It's a good all around caliber and I never feel under-gunned carrying my G26. I use 147gr ammo for some extra punch but after testing it myself I wouldn't want to get shot by any of my 9mm's anywhere.

I agree with my friend tantrix, as I much prefer the 9m/m and the
.45 ACP, over all .40 caliber weaponary. I don't guess there is anything
wrong with the .40; I just NEVER could warm up too it, after owning and
shooting a NIB SIGARMS P229, a LNIB Glock 23 with New York trigger, and
a NIB Glock 27. Of all three, I shot the sub-compact G-27 the best~! Now,
I don't own any .40 caliber weapons. ;) :D

FWIW:

I've always been a 9mm fan.

I've owned, or own in 9mm:

Bel./Browning HiPower
Tokarev (Chinese)
Star BM
S&W 3913
Bersa Thunder 9/Ultra Compact
Sig P239
KelTec P11
Walther P99c/AS
Walther P99/AS
Walther P1
Walther P5

IMO the past couple of decades (after the Miami police shootout fiasco) ammo manufacturers have really improved higher quality self defense rounds in 9mm. I like CorBon, but other excellent "man stopper" rounds in 9mm can be found.

I have no argument with those folks who say 9 rds of 40cal or 45cal are BETTER, but I'm pretty sure my Walther P99/AS with 15+1 rounds of 9mm could be pretty discouraging to a bg...

Nice to have caliber, and different pistol choices.. For me the 9mm in a quality pistol is sufficient.

I don't care for it. Not because I have a dislike for the cartridge itself, I just don't care for the platforms it's chambered in and its handloading limitations. I can't get myself excited about automatics. Believe me, I've tried.

I don't hate the 9MM, I just can't fall in love with it. I do love the .45 and the .40, especially the .45!:)

Maybe it takes getting used to.

I've shot powerful calibers: .40S&W, 45s and .50 hand cannons.

After being used to the .40+, and then shooting a 9mm...it feels like shooting a .22lr plinker.

I'm a hardcore Glock man, but when the calibers start going up in size I'm all revolver on those.

Nothing beats slinging a 360gr slug at 1425fps out of a big bore revolver. :D

My contrarian streak pushes me toward the 9 - too many 'operators' who think the size of your hollowpoint is directly related to the size of your...

.45 is fine enough - bonus points for all the lovely guns chambered for it.

But the .40? No real advantage to it (IMO, yada yada yada). Anything chambered in .40 is probably chambered in 9mm, practice ammo is almost as costly as .45, and defensive rounds aren't markedly superior to their 9mm counterparts. The only benefit I could see is if you were required to carry FMJ rounds.

I prefer .45 over all, but I do want to get a 9mm mainly for the cheap ammunition.

I must admit that back in the 80's I was not much of a 9mm fan. I shot my .357 colt trooper and Ruger P90 in 45. Felt the 45 was the best all around gun. Then I picked up a P226 in 9mm and started looking into the market of hallow points. You can get some great rounds from several companies.

I now have the P226, PCR, and am thinking of a g26 or Karh Tech P-9. All great 9 mm platforms. For the cost, performance, and just plain fun...you can not beat a 9mm.

Be safe.

Well, we all live and learn. I'll admit that I once had little use for the 9, mostly because I was a revolver freak. But, after getting into .45ACP with a couple of 1911s, I bought a Tokarev in 9mm and it was fun to shoot. Sold that, got a P95. Bought a P85 cheap, traded the P95. Bought a Kel Tec P11 for carry when i got my CCW. I can say, while it ain't the top caliber in my list of favorites, it's up there for its chambering in pocket sized autos. It's about the most powerful service load you can get in a pocket, arguably as powerful as a 2" snub .357 magnum and much easier to control. There have been a few small .40s, but they push the definition of pocket sized.

I shoot the P85 (basically the P89) a lot because it's so fun to shoot. I have five 15 round mags for it, used to shoot it in IDPA. Nice gun. I got it for cheap, cheap from a friend so traded the P95 after acquiring it. I've seen one post on this site badmouthing the P89, so I figure if only one guy flamed it, it must be a good gun, LOL! Well, all I know is the P85 is a dandy and it's basically the same gun as the P89.

I always plan to have at least one large frame 9mm. Maybe I'll get into CZs or Hi Powers in the future, never know. I'd like to get a Hi Power, never owned one, though I ain't really into single action. They are rather thin and compact for a full size carry gun, though, nice little guns. Just the price usually turns me off. Picked up my Ruger for $200 with two magazines. :D

Some time back I decided having to keep a bunch of ammo in many different calibers was a pain.-:banghead:

I thought about it and settled on 9mm too and now all of my pistols accept my P-3ATs are 9mm.

Even my one 1911 platform (Para hawg 9) is a 9mm.

You have become enlightened.

We do get wiser with age, don't we?
:)

Americans shoot .45, French people shoot 9mm.
I didn't think the French ever shot their guns!

I thought they used them to hang a white flag on.

Some Americans shoot .45, but this one prefers .357mag, ahhh thank you very much. .38's for getting in touch with the feminine side. :p

I had a .40 cal Beretta96 but could not feel the love.

Recently though I had the chance to shoot a friends 9mm and I gotta say, there is an attraction growing. It's such a cheap date that I'm think about adding one to my collection. :D
