Tales of one who DISLIKES 9mm

Americans shoot .45, French people DROP 9mm.

There, fixed it for ya';) . No charge friend. No charge.

when the sumb!@$% absolutely positively has to be put down with a pistol, count on foty five !!:)

I have always loved the 9mm and the 45 acp...also loved the 10mm but the availablity & cost of ammo helped me downsize my collection. I have also had 40's but could not warm up to them at all. The Beretta 96 came close, but still not quite right.

I love the .45acp cartridge but I believe the 9mm is "good enough" that soon I will be buying the XD9 SC. I also like the economical advantage of the 9mm. .357mag is good, but I'm very concerned about overpenetration. As for the .40s&w or .357sig, you couldn't pay me enough to own one....unless you bought me a lifetime supply of ammo. I'll stick to the "popular" rounds, thank you.

I've never hated any cal. round. they all have a purpose. I love .357 MAG. in revolvers and .45 ACP. in semi-autos, I'll shoot ANYTHING else when given the chance! As for 9mm. it will do the job just fine. :)

I like 9's, kind of . . .

Does liking the 9x23 Winchester qualify me as a "9mm" supporter? It is a 9mm after all. Don't have much use for 9mm Luger after I discovered the 9x23 Win.

My bias towards the 9mm was through military fmj ammo. My unit still had .45's and the prospect of having to switch was not welcome. I also do not like the M9 platform

As stated the 9mm has come a long way as a defensive round with HP's and as I read and talk to more people who use it I have developed more respect for it. It is accurate and affordable to shoot and because of that I have one in my collection with the prospects of adding another. I am still a .45 guy, but the 9 has grown on me.

If it weren't for the Americans, the French would be speaking German.

If it weren't for the French, the Americans would be speaking Iroquois.

:neener:

I like the 9mm well enough. For carry, you can get them in smaller pistols, and smaller is good for CCW. Ammo is cheap, it's easy to shoot. There's a lot to like.

Having said that, I REALLY like the holes a .45 puts in the target. I just picked up a G36 and am going to transition from the PM9 to the G36 for carry, specifically because those great big holes sure instill confidence, especially when they're going where they're supposed to on the target. But, the 9mm has it's place. Count me in the "I neither love nor hate the 9mm, but it serves a purpose" category.

Total Power = X Anyone else hear of this?

For years now, I have heard officers talk of "total firepower". When one starts crunching the numbers, the real-life difference bwteen the 9MM Luger, the .40 S&W and even the .45 ACP does not always equate to much. The total firepower can depend more on the number rounds than the individual (single-round's) power. I'll wait to see if other know what I am saying here.

I think Colt's offering many years back, wed the perfect balance of a 1911 platform with the 9MM, then they called it the .38 Super. It has handload velocities that exceed even the .357 Sig! I don't know if the format will hold here or not. I'll try to paste some examples:

Mass * velocity / 7,000 (grains / pound) = Foot Pounds Energy
Grains Velocity Power factor FPE Mag. Cap. Total FPE
115 1300 149500.00 21.36 15 320.36

Grains Velocity Power factor FPE Mag. Cap. Total FPE
180 1100 198000.00 28.29 13 367.71

Grains Velocity Power factor FPE Mag. Cap. Total FPE
230 1050 241500.00 34.50 10 345.00

I once owned a 1991A1 Colt .45 ACP Spooky Old Alice (my ex-wife) asked me to please sell it so I traded it for a 1903A3, I miss the gun more than the wife.
When I was looking into handguns again I bought a FM M95 HP 9mm I liked it soo much I bought a FEG PJK 9HP also 9mm, then I decided I wanted to hunt with a handgun so I bought a Ruger GP 100 6in blue .357.
I love the 9mm's and find them amazingly accurate, reliable, and inexpensive to shoot. They are as practical for home defense as any other caliber, since most HD shooting will be less than 20 feet and if a gun won't stop somebody at that range it isn't an HD gun.
I will own a 1911A1 again but I like those 9mm HP copies or clones.

I can't have one in base housing,

and why not? I sure had no problems kepping them in my house on post!

Well I am physically capable of keeping a weapon in my house. If I bring a weapon into my house without authorization, I am in violation of a lawful order issued by the base CG. If I want to make a career out of the Marine Corps, I don't want to jepordize my career by disregarding an order of such a trivial matter. I have a dog, a baseball bat, a few knives, and I'm pretty handy in a fight. I don't need a gun in my house.

Oh and btw, how the hay do you use quote?

As long as it isn't the perpetual joke, .25ACP, I have no problem with any handgun round. The 9mm Parabellum is comparable in age to the .45ACP so they've both been around for a comparable length of time. Today, the 9mm and the .45ACP are the two most prolific handgun rounds in the United States.

They wouldn't both have that distinction if they didn't work.

Personally - and I think this is the key word, I like the .40 better for CCW. I have a Sig P229 and a P239 in .40 that I carry on a regular basis. I still like to shoot my 9's (mostly my P228) for the cost of ammo and the light recoil.
I think choice of caliber is much like choice of gun manufacturer, and of course which one you shoot better. :)

I, too...

...was late to the game with the 9mm. But given the proliferation of the round world-wide, I thought I'd try one a few years back. Now I have 3 guns in that round: Steyr S9, Rohrbaugh R9, and my Kel-Tec Sub2000. The first two have become my primary/secondary carry guns, I like them so much - and the little Sub2000 carbine is always handy in a briefcase!

Nothing at all wrong with a .357 mag or a .45 for self-defense calibres. Or a .22 for shootin' all day. Or even my hideous little .25 Raven as a last-ditch, tuck-it-in-their-eyesocket pistol. But I've become very fond of shooting a hell of a lot of 9mm... :D

I originally stayed away from the 9mm because of the stupid 10 round mags(AWB days)...the low capacity mags just made the gun feel incomplete. After the ban expired I came to realize just what I was missing.

+1

Americans shoot .45, French people shoot 9mm

Seriously though, the difference between a gun in 9 or .40 is usually one round, why would any one pick 9mm (other then being $1-2 cheaper a box). The performance of .40 or .45 is enough to make up for a buck or a round... imo

9mm+P vs. .45+P in ballistic gelatin. Huge difference! Expansion? Penetration?
A 9mm performing it's very best is still less than a .45 at it's very worst!
What would you rather get shot with?

What would you rather get shot with?

I'd rather not get shot. The 9mm is a faster moving round than the .45, and acquiring a followup shot is easier.

Plus, the .40 is a larger heavier platform on the same frame as a 9mm, ammo is much more expensive, and the guns get beat to death with it. I have heard a lot about platforms that are just fine for 9mm that the .40 simply trashes. Kahr and Glocks are 2 that come to mind.

For someone who is getting paid to take a BG to the ground and cuff him, alternatives are limited. Not so for a CCW type person who is defending himself. The trick there is to engage as quickly as possible, buy some time, and E&E. I prefer the 9mm for that type of work. If I was gunfighting at the OK corral, in the wide open spaces, I would probably prefer a .45. In tighter quarters, I think the 9mm is a solid performer if your survival is a priority to you. 9mms simply shoot and recover faster.

My .02 - YMMV
