well i've been reading alot of posts about home defense.i taught my wife how to load and shoot my shotgun in the case i am not home. she asked me is it legal to shoot someone in your house? i said well i'm sure it is. i'm not so sure. if someone breaks into my house after warning, if they do not retreat am i allowed to fire on them? will i go to jail for it?

second question about this is, i have a three year old so a rule we live by is never bringing ammunition into the house ammo is picked up on the way or at the shoot location.. where is a safe place to locate a few deffense shells, if they were locked in a box chances are we wouldnt get to them intime to to comfront an intruder. will a hidden inaccessible location due untill he comes of age? or is that unheard of?. perhaps a rule of thumb is never leave unlocked munitions in a home with a child. the guns are unlocked but so far there is no reason for panic as we have no ammo to fire the gun at anytime.. i know the kid can't load the gun, but i wouldnt want to get comfortable with leaving shells in the bed room unlocked. how do i maintain my hd kit.

The laws vary from state to state on HD/SD. If your state has a "castle doctrine" then your ok. If your state has a "duty to retreat" then it gets tricky. It would help if we knew what state you reside in.

Keeping longarms for HD readily available while keeping them away from little hands provides more challenges than you will encounter with a handgun. It would be best to leave the shells loaded in the tube (if your shotgun is a pump or auto) as loading them in the middle of the night, under stress, in a hurry will be a challenge. If it were me in your situation I would leave the shells loaded in the tube and a cable lock run through the action. The gun cannot be fired in that condition and getting it ready would be as simple as removing the lock and chambering a round.

live in louisiana brother. not sure of the law on hd/sd

considering i now have enough guns to convert one to soul hd duty should work out well to filling the mag and locking the chamber with a key in the top drawer. the gun was originally considered for the marsh, but i've grown way more attached to a o/u. i'm thinking of having the barrel sawed down
