Ordered a 5X7 sheet of the rubber style off eBay for $12 and free shipping because Amazon wants $5.99 to ship a flat envelope. Did so mainly because Hickock 45 thinks Talon is great so why not?
But I've read some disparaging comments here mainly on the pre-formed grips.
Any advice on cutting and making my own panels? Good idea or not? Could try it on several different models like HK Expert, CZ 75 PCR, Armscor MAAP, Springfield XD. If you don't like it can it be removed somewhat easily?

I bought precut ones for a couple guns. They work good on thinner gripped guns, not so much on thicker grips.

I don't have the patience to be cutting them out in the wild.

I used to cut out skateboard tape for mine. The Talons and others were not aggressive enough.

The problem with the tapes, you cut or pre cut is, they generally dont fit all that great, and dont really hold up to hard use for very long. WD40 and Gun Scrubber seemed to get any leftover adhesive residue off without too much trouble.

If youre going to cut your own, probably best to try making paper patterns out of a similar weight paper instead of winging it. I gave up trying to do that and just put multiple smaller strips where I wanted things.

Then I said screw it and started stippling. For my polymer guns, that was the best decision I made, but I know a lot of people dont want to get into it.

The Talon grips have worked well for me. But recently I did remove a set and replaced with a Pachmeyer rubber slip-on because they have a slight Palm swell. My hands are medium sized but I like the grip to fill my hand. Hogue makes slip-ons also. But to the original question, Talon pre cut grips work well for me and they can be removed.

Agree and agree.
I have Talon rubber on three guns; great on the hideout pistols, but even that thin material considerably changes the feel of my S&W Plastic M&P 9mm. If I were shooting it more, I would peel off the rubber and rough up the stippling.

Are they enough better than Tractiongrips to cost twice as much? I have a couple of guns with the Tractiongrips on them and they work quite well.
I don't know, but the Talon grips are only $20. That's less than a box of ammo. Splurge a little.

If $10 ammo was the equal of $20 ammo would you go ahead and spurge on the higher prices stuff that did no better than the cheap? It is your money so spend it as you wish.

I'm shooting a $1,000 gun, with ammo at $50 a box, mags are $30 each, a handful of $100 holsters, and $50 mag pouches. Twenty bucks for some rubber wrap, that I may like to try out just for the heck of it, that I can install and remove myself, and may throw away after one use, isn't going to even register on my thought process. That's less than half a tank of gas, or somewhere near dinner for two at McDonald's.

A $150 set of sights that I may need to pay a pro to install, and will probably take more than 10 minutes for me to figure out if I like them, and then would need to have a gunsmith change out again if I didn't like them, that I'm going to think about.

I'm not saying you need to try them, and I'm not saying they are better than the $10 grip thingy's you're using. I'm just saying $20 to try them out, to find they were terrible, and then had to replace them with the $10 ones you like, is only $30 out of your pocket.

I use Traction Grips a lot. They are just as good, maybe the same thing as Talons. And I use to be a product “reviewer” for Talon, which are good but not really worth the extra money UNLESS they have a set for model no one else has. And their is a seller on FleaBay that sells precuts on popular models for under $10. Used them all, can’t tell a difference between them. So no matter much money I have spent on my pistol, I see no reason to waste my money. It’s it’s an equal product, and in this case they are, why pay extra. Unless you just want that little “T” cut into the grip.

The real secret to grip tape is heating the wrap TWICE. Really adheres to the weapon on that second heating/pressing.

I find that I like a slip on grip sleeve better, like others that have commented. The tape helps if the weapon fits already and you need extra grip or to cover up an too aggressive stippling. The grip sleeve usually adds more bulk to the palm swells or outside diameter if that is what is needed. The tape is so thin it really doesn’t add much.

Good luck,
Lefty

Lots of good input. I've been using the slip-on finger grips for various semi-autos and a wrap around under the panels for my 1911. Like them all but the slip-ons tend to rotate a bit after several rounds and have to be re-centered from time to time but no real biggie.

Will try making some custom design from the Talon sheet for 1 lucky pistol and see how it works.

Like I said, it's your money so spend it as you wish. I have used traction grips on a couple of guns for years and like them and know they will last so I will just save my twenty bucks to spend on something else.
