I was just curious if this is a viable conversion? The new Springfield Scout and SOCOM are interesting rifles but I like the Garand. Tanker conversion kits are available and from what I understand, if done properly, the shorter Garand is a reliable gun. Has anyone done (or tried) a tanker in .308? Ammo is cheaper and it just seems like it would be a fun gun.

Thanks

Muzzel blast is harse. Generaly don't function as well as the real rifle.
Your comments are a bit too generalized to be totally accurate.

Muzzle blast can be harsh, but when fitted with an appropriate muzzle brake, it's tolerable. The Smith muzzle brake is probably a good choice for taming the T-26 blast.

Tankers can be perfectly reliable, if built by someone who KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. The reputation Tankers get for being unreliable is becuase so many have been cobbled together by hacks, and consequently don't run well.

From what I've read on the Internet (tm), the poor reputation of many of the so-called "Tanker" Garands is also because many of them were built from receivers that had been chopped and scrapped and then welded back together.

I've shot a Tanker conversion in 30-06 with a ~3" flash hider that appeared to be OK. It was a very handy rifle and a blast to shoot.

You probably know this, but you can also just convert the standard Garand to .308.

I have one. I bought it from someone and really only shot it a couple times. It has a BIG muzzle brake on it. very little recoil though. Works fine every time.
more accurate than me (what isn't;) )
I like it.

I've got one, and love it to death. Great rifle.

I put a Smith brake on it, which reduced the recoil noticably, but makes it really loud. Performance with a bare muzzle was really nothing to complain about - consider that all those CETMEs and HK-91s out there are .308s with even shorter (16") barrels, but you don't hear complaints about massive muzzle blast or recoil with them.
