How about WD 40. Have that? Use that and some extra fine steel wool.

Your brass looks exactly like when a new dryer sheet fouled them up. Don't ask how I know that!;)

Don't use acetone, it's a form of alcohol that evaporates very quickly and is very explosive. We use acetone and acetate both to thin our solvent based inks on the printing presses we run.

It takes the smallest static spark to set the stuff off.

Our presses are class 1, division 1, explosion proof machines. The fumes are heavier than air and drop and just stay their.

That is some nasty stuff.

What I don't understand is why this brass should be fouled up when the other 100,000 cases I've tumbled using the exact same method look like new.

I'll try WD40 and then Zylene or mineral spirits. if I can find some. I don't trust the "substitute" that home despot and lowe's has.

I used it outside, stirred with wood, no steel anywhere, but thanks for the warning. If I ever need to use it for anything I'll be careful.

Lets start from the beginning,:) Was this factory ammo?? Did it have "tar" on the inside of the case neck?? If not , then I almost guarantee it is from the dryer sheets, If it is, It is a real pain to get off as you have found. You may also have fouled your tumble media, so I suggest changing it. Dryer sheets new or used do very little. I just use a 1/4 sheet of blue paper towel with some mineral spirits on it, it collects the dust. Also how much polish do you add to the dry media, a few cap fulls or lots of it?

I do not know why it has not messed up your brass before, but it does, you will find other threads on this, NEW ones are not advised.

How many pierces of brass are messed up? As I mentioned I used a new dryer sheet (as we really never use them at all) and it made my brass look just like yours. It was some time ago. I do remember using steel wool and Mineral Spirits AKA(Paint thinner) not the odorless junk, and then re tumbled them.

One cap full of nu-finish and only once every 10th batch or so. New factory Aguila ammo from CMP. I only use dryer sheets when I remember and that's not very often. Like maybe one out of 10 times. Haven't added mineral spirits for a while as I ran out. But when I did it was every 4-5 batches or so and just a capful.

I wouldn't be sure it was the "new" dryer sheets because he already said other brass tumbled at the same time came out shiny and new. I can remember tumbling some M855 brass where I had pulled the bullets and popped out the primers. It had tar on the inside next and on the bullets. I used mineral spirits to remove the tar.

Ooh wee, those are filthy. Yea, I'd have to find out how to get those bad boys clean.

Dirty Brass

I think that I have the same problem with 223 brass I was given the other day.
Brass was in a medal coffee can that was stored in a medal shed in the AZ heat (100+ degrees).

250 WCC & 200 LC brass was in the can. Used Dillon vibrator cleaner, corn cob & Dillon polish.

Ran them for 48hrs trying to clean them. They look just like your pictures of the 30cal carbine brass. No dryer sheet. Tried several different bore cleaners and it didn't do anything. This is the first time I have had any problems like this.
