Taser system put to the test

2. IDABEL -- McCurtain County Sheriff's deputies used the department's newly acquired taser system to control a suspect last week for the first time, Sheriff Mike Willeby said.

Ryan London and Mark Hannah responded to a call of a person trespassing on private property in an area just outside Idabel's city limits, Willeby said. They found a man sitting on the porch of an abandoned house and inhaling paint from a bread sack.

The deputies told the man he was under arrest for inhaling toxic vapors, a misdemeanor, but he just laughed at them, Willeby said. The man was given several warnings and was instructed to comply with commands to place his hands behind his back so he could be handcuffed, but instead he charged at the deputies in a threatening manner with arms raised.

London deployed the taser and brought the suspect under control.

"The use of this system by our deputy sheriffs was a good example of how a less lethal device can keep both our personnel safe, and the offenders from injury," Willeby said.
