Taught my wife to shoot...what was I thinking??

I started bringing my wife to the range so shooting could be a "family" activity. I even bought her her own gun for our anniversary -- a Ruger KP93. She's been to the range with it a couple of times now, and she's starting to get pretty darn good with it.

So what was I thinking?? I've now trained and armed a woman who spends all day taking care of four kids -- from the age of 14 to 1. How nuts am I to teach her how to shoot...and shoot accurately? Here's one of her targets from this afternoon's sessions at the range:



That was 34 rounds from about 5 yds. I just have to make sure she never gets mad enough at me to demonstrate her marksman skills!

Women will surprise you with just how quickly they become good shots. My wife was the same way. She got better as the power of the ammo increased and was best with the hot-rod SD stuff. Yup it's scary, I wouldn't think of crossing her since then . SM, you are SO right! Once she laid claim it was a done deal!

That's why I pre-empted her by buying her one of her own! She even calls it "her gun". Fortunately most of the guns I have are too big for her hands. Although if she ever tries to lay claim to my Walther P99, there's going to be problems!

I think women are better shots because they aren't men. We're all pre-programmed on how to shoot, starting from when we were kids. (Yes, some girls are, too!) But I think that in general, women are better at listening to directions and actually following them...men hate to be told what to do because that's a sign that we're "inadequate" at something. In any case, I'm going to get her hooked up with some formal instruction with one of our local instructors and get her beyond that "stand and shoot" mode.

Most moms put fingerpaintings up on the fridge...my wife posts her targets as a warning to our teenage sons!

Several of the women I've had the privilege of introducing to shooting turned out to be very good shots. They didn't seem to have much of the resistance to learning many male shooters have.

Truth to tell, it took me quite awhile to think to ask questions of old time bullseye shooters when I was a newbie. I believe I assumed determination and practice alone would transform me into a crack shot.

I handed my GF CZ75B and it was OK.
Handed her my FN Forty-Nine and it was over. She said she wanted one in 9mm but with a hammer. FNP-9 came home a few weeks later.

Her first choice was a Sig 229

The first gun my wife ever shot was my Sig P228. It was "okay".

I ran her through my Walther, Steyr and Glock...I think she liked the Walther the best.

I bought the Ruger P93 for her...and she's adopted it. I just picked up my CZ 75BD last week, so she hasn't had a chance to shoot it yet. I think she might like that -- or maybe the P-01, being slightly smaller. We'll see....I wouldn't object to buying her the P-01 and getting the P93 back for myself!

Mine puts hers on the fridge too. Not exactly incognito when others come over to visit, but on the other hand it's probably a decent deterrent if anyone has less than honorable intentions.

You can bet that junior's targets will also find a nice home up there as well.

She's never been afraid to grab what ever gun I had out and pop a few shots then put it down and walk away. Then in Feb she took an NRA basic pistol course (taught in part by Chris) , she did that one with my Glock 19 , didn't suit her. Then she started showing up at the .22 bowling pin shoots we do. Said she wanted a single stack 9mm , needed a much smaller grip than the Glock, also some slightly heavier for less muzzle flip.\

I got a chance to buy a nice P7M8 for a fair price so I nabbed it, much much better but still not "zen", so I got a nice p7m8 , went to the big gunstore up north and she fondled around a few and walked out with an S&W 3913LS , the LadySmith. Some Hogue grips and we have zen. We go to an IDPA beginners clinic , then shoot a match a week later. At the match after one stage the RO gives her the best group award , four of her six targets both shots could be covered by a 1"x1" paster, she needs to learn what "combat accurate" is, so now we have IDPA targets hanging around the livingroom for impromptu dry fire practice.

Oh , forgot to mention , she dragged (HAH!) me to the gunstore to get her own .22 pistol for the bowling pin and summer steel shoots. Double ammo for everything , so much for this years gun budget

She's now my ex (and has been for 14 years). She shot her boyfriend in my kitchen with my gun. 5 torso shots and one to my refridgerator with my 357 back in 1991.

After many years of marriage, I couldn't teach her to leave the toilet seat, but man, could she ever shoot. BTW, she got off on self defense, but I know better.

Speaking of Larry and Sandy...

Sandy told me up front - she likes shotguns , she can shoot them. The "purchase" was more for the grandkids and one bigger "kid" named Larry.

Now the way I understand it, Sandy is great with a rifle and handgun...

Seems one day Larry ran inside to get his .243, varmit on the property. Well before he can get back out -"Bang". Sandy fires a shot from a 22-250 from the upstairs bathroom widow. Waves, and hollers down to Larry..." Honey...I took care of the varmit..."

Larry went back inside and put up his .243.

I took mine out last week. I want her to carry in her truck (legal in FL) and wanted her to shoot various handguns to see which one she was most comfortable with.

Started her out on my P-32, then, then my M-85 Taurus wheel gun, the S&W 4516 and finally the Ruger MKII 4' bull barrel (the last one was just for fun.)

She decided she liked the wheel-gun best, which was fine with me. Pull the trigger and it goes bang. Not a lot of chances to misfire.

So now she wants to go again THIS week with the rifles!

I'll bring the .22 Marlin, the Yugo SKS, and maybe even my uber-ugle High Point 9mm carbine. I'll spare her the Mosin M44 though

I think it is great that you and your wife now have a hobby that you can enjoy together. Looks like she can shoot very well.
My husband has gotten me hooked on shooting. I now have 2 handguns and three rifles of my own and enjoy knowing how to shoot accurately and then also how to clean and maintain them. We also have taken the concealed weapon permit class together. I look forward to the weekends when we can get a babysitter and then we head off to the range for some "together" time.

Been there and did that. My baby daughter (6' 3" blond) now sports a PT 145 CCH. She started off specializing in headshots. Her first target featured a nice ragged hole right on the button. Adorned the back door for the longest time.

BTW, one notch to the left.
